I have a much loved VHS tape recording that I'd like to transfer to DVD for safekeeping and to stop further deterioration.
Any suggestions how I can do this?
I sent it to a company that does this, but they have just emailed me saying it is copyright ... copyright? On an old VHS tape?

Sorry if this is an old theme - I'm new to this part of AOS. :)
Can't you buy a dvd recorder or one of those dvd/video combi ones off ebay for £20 or £30 then resell it?

VHS deck and a DVD recorder?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-DRT389H-Digital-Recorder-Interface/dp/B0018BTP7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363167694&sr=8-1
Something like that would probably do the job but I've just picked this at random so I'd check all the features fit what you need, especially what outputs your VHS deck has and whether there is equivalent on the DVD recorder, ie SCART probably.
I transferred an old US NTSC home movie VHS tape which had itself been transferred from 8mm film onto DVD and it didn't come out too badly really. Once on DVD you can then rip to PC and use software to chop it up, edit it, copy back to DVD, etc.
Cheers,
Tony
ps. yes, as Stu says...Ebay!

Hmm, yeah.
I'm pretty sure that some of those VHS/DVD combi players cannot record to DVD, Stu. Only I'm not sure which ones can and which ones can't!

My VHS player is a cheapo and only has SCART video output, I think.

I don't want to spend that much - £50 tops. :)

My PC has a DVD record facility - so maybe a SCART to USB converter?
Are there such things?
Anyone tried this?
Get a dvd recorder jerry.
Should be cheap nowadays.

Guessing you will need a scart - rca lead.

Perhaps the best way is to find a SCART to USB adaptor so I can use the DVD recorder in my laptop straight from my VHS player?
That's kind of lo-tech to hi-tech. I wonder if they exist?

Aha - maybe this is the answer? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-VHS-To-DVD-Converter-Video-Converter-Capture-Complete-Scart-Kit-Leads-/320895857185?pt=UK_Computing_TV_Tuner_Video_Captur e_Devices&hash=item4ab6e23221
Or will my PC need some sort of fancy soundcard?

Why wouldn't "an old VHS tape" be copyrighted?
Just because its old has nothing to do with it.
VHS films used to have a spoiler signal that was not picked up on playback, but was picked up by a recording head.
The protection was called Macrovision IIRC.
Any DVD recording interfaces out there are still sensitive to the Macrovision spoiler signal.
At one time you could readily purchase an interface that would filter out the spoiler signal, however that changed a good few years ago, when it became illegal to sell such devices in the UK.
What was the movie on the VHS tape, Jerry?

Ah well, fair enough.
We'll see if it works.
It's intended as a genuine backup copy, so sometimes that's allowed?
The recording is of a very special performance of the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, The Mikado. :)

Your tape might not have Macrovision protection - the transfer company might just be covering their backside from a potential legal perspective.
Has the performance not been released on DVD already?

I thought that was the case, but sometimes it's easy to overlook the obvious ;)

If it's NOT Macrovision protected I can copy it at work for you (FoC), unfortunately our equipment will not remove Macrovision. You would need to post it to me, I'll gladly donate a DVD+R (Verbatim, decent quality)
My first DVD player a Pioneer 444 (I still have it) was coupled through my Panasonic NICAM VCR, Macrovision disabled, region free, so DVD to VHS no problem but not t'other way.
