Evening all,

I have been working on a new project to build some Tannoy Autographs after a lot of consideration and over two years involvement with building the Westminster clones I decided that this would bring as much enjoyment as my previous work and also be potentially something that i could carry on to a small business with the wind behind me. This off course means producing a faithful re production of the originals from top to bottom, the only changes being in areas that seem obvious to improve regarding sound quality so the sides, backs, tops ,bottoms and the front horn will be constructed from 18mm BB Birch rather than the original thinner choice of timber.

I am building two pairs, these will be staggered as the first pair will be a dry run to get to know the design but they are going together very nicely as it stands. I am fortunate enough to have the input of my mate John who has a very nice workshop just over the road from me and has a keen interest in the project and offered his help and facilities in building these speakers which was most welcome.

They are a complicated design, lots of internal small parts that are beveled at different degrees on all sides and the larger panels are not much easier, the joinery is routed top and bottom and bracing will be solid oak.

I will add more thoughts on the construction etc as i build but this is where i am at the moment, i hope its its of interest to a few Tannoy faithfuls

Here are the panels cut to size for the build,

Great stuff.

An ambitious project by any standards, I doubt many people have replicated the Autographs. In fact I doubt many have even heard them. I have!

If they're as good as your Westminsters, they'll be something to behold. Best of luck with this project. I look forward to seeing more!

Someone down here has built a pair, I will try and find a link for you.

Evening all, well after realizing the complexity of fitting the front horn we built another from scrap to be sure of the best solution to all the bolts lining up. This horn has 530mm to sit into, anything bigger or smaller obviously won't fit so it has to be bang on. This means the bevels on the horn need to be exact. This front horn sits or locates onto another baffle within the cabinet sandwiching the edge driver in between which measures at 19.5mm and a gasket is also needed at 4mm. On top of this the bolts need to come through the front horn, through the driver and locate in the back baffle and the front of the horn needs to nest in tightly around the front of the speaker.

It fits a peach The bolts go through and locate precisely where they should do, this was the final nut to crack so we now have, to our great relief,a nearly finished cabinet.

I have also stretched a grill cloth which will end up with maple moldings running top to bottom and am delighted with the look of the cloth against the timber, anyway take a look, these speakers are very hard to build!

Cheers Paul, here is an update, the grilles for the first cabinet have been routed out and stretched, the first layers of finish are going on to the timber and the second cabinet is underway, a lot of work here:) and still moldings to go around front grille, tops and bottoms.

Thanks folks, thought i would update the thread.

Rarebird, small quantities of hardwood are pricey and a lot of timber suppliers are only interested in bigger orders really so i buy mine in big pieces and cut to size.

Well briefly the front horns fit with a 4mm gasket gap, cabinets sprayed black like the originals and nearly finished the finishing, crossovers on their way and monitor golds at the ready, just the 2nd pair to build now which will be veneered in cherry, we have built and have cnc'ed some steel routing jigs for certain panels so hope they will go together well.

Quality work, Simon, as usual... They look awesome! Wonder if they'll sound even better than your Westies? :eyebrows:

You can't beat 'proper' speakers with man-sized drive units and cabinets with a suitably wide baffle area! I'd love to start a campaign to rid the world of diddy-sized 'squawk-boxes' and skinny floorstanders. Let's get back to how things used to be, before the bullshite of 'WAF', when men were MEN!! :exactly:

Cheers Folks,

Still waiting on cross overs but have been adding some finishing touches to the binding posts so thought i would post some pics of those, they are mounted to 4mm thick copper and routed into the side of the speaker, the opening in which they sit is 16mm deep allowing them to be pushed in closely to the wall as they are designed to do so.

I got my binding posts from Audio Note just 10 mins walk away, so thanks to the ever helpful Peter for that, very kind.

The copper was drilled out then a small notch filed in to keep the posts from moving and the routed aperture has 3mm solid maple lining the inside. The copper was polished to a satin finish and sealed with a clear wax.

The Westminsters are sounding good, constant cross over tweaks and the second set of cabinets are interesting as the front mid horn was built to creep in closer around the driver a kin to the originals, which is much better than with the MDF pair where the circumference of the cone was visible. I will up date that thread with further explanation etc soon as voicing these Westminsters has been a hard slog after building two sets of cabinets, countless cross over changes, bass horn alterations, wire selections etc.

I'm liking the copper mounting plate Simon...a really nice touch. Out of interest, the values for your Westy crossovers...did you end up reverting to the Tannoy Factory values or what have you changed from the standard crossover values? I'm guessing that perhaps the notch filter values or treble roll off resistor values may have altered but that the crossover frequencies are the same? I found that any attempt to raise the crossover point simply resulted in vastly increased mid range distortion so stuck with Tannoy's own values. The only thing I needed to add was a series resistor to one of the inductors to replicate the exact factory inductor circuit DC resistance values as I couldn't source an after market inductor for the correct value (notch filter).

Well they are in fact finished and up and running.

The drivers arrived this week and David was here all day Thursday armed with soldering iron and what a lovely day, we eventually got these up and running too our delight and what a shock, they are different to the Westminsters by some margin which was not expected but bare in mind my comparison is based on my DIY Westminsters that are by no means original and do still need a little work in the cross over department. I am building all these cabinets to work my way through to a speaker that I can appreciate rather than settle for in my own odd way after my musical instinct toward these divers (I have Monitor Golds in the Autographs which I prefer to the HPD 385's) led me through this process.
These Autographs are totally original with regards to the cabinets and only benefit from the 18mm timber applied in what I thought might be potential weak points, the first plus was that they take up considerably less space, here is a picture of the Westminster in my room.
