Strange Maxell Record Cleaner

I have a rare battery powered Maxell record cleaner, a real curiosity. It's the only one of these I've come across. It's placed on the record and drives itself round brushing as it goes (fine rotary brush), works rather well actually.

It can be used on a turntable or the record can be placed on the accompanying stand/base and cleaned there. The driving wheel and outer contact pad do not touch the pressing grooves.

It takes 4 AA batteries. This is in good working order, the lid has a crack and the 45 adaptor is missing, I guess any 45 adaptor will work.

Anyway, it's up for grabs. Make me a sensible offer if it's of interest. Buyer pays postage.

Seriously though, I haven't got a clue what this might be worth to anybody, if anything. It is fun to use though and cleans well.

It doesn't predict the future or allow you to cnmmunicate with alien entities, then? It just cleans records?

Must admit it's not something I can ever recall seeing before.

I had one of those at one time Geoff, lord knows where it went though. Bought it in '81 IIRC for around a tenner from Andy's Records in Northampton. Mine was quite noisy :eyebrows:

I have also got one Dave, bought about the same time as you. I think I paid about UK£18.00p at the time but can't be sure. First came across one of these when DSJR (Dave on here) and I paid a visit to Jimmy Hughes place in London mid 1980s. He used it to brush any fluff or dust off a spinning record about to be played. I still use mine for the same purpose but not on a spinning platter but a separate one as the Maxwell itself, mounted to the spindle, does the radial rotation itself. Not the final word in Vinyl cleaning but does clear dust etc of the record. The fine hair on the cleaning rod spin around like the old vacuum cleaners use to do. Like a vacuum cleaner you do have to take it apart (easy) to get rid of the debris collected. Mesmerizing, I love mine and still in use with numerous battery changes along the way :)

My memory is not what it was so I may have paid more than a tenner. I bought it because I'd previously visited Listen Inn on Gold Street beforehand and spotted one doing cleaning duties in there and I just had to have one. I remembered Andy's Records stocked them so off I trotted to grab one. I was a terrible gadget freak back then (still am)... :lol:

By the way, congratulations for this beautiful Toshiba turntable. Are the yellow circles for bubble adjustment?

I'd forgotten about this thread. To add to my user experience of this product, one of the systems I used it on was a Sony HMP70 pictured (a nicely constructed and decent sounding unit actually). The problem with using the Maxell on the HMP70 was that the Maxell didn't quite clear the arm, so I needed to spin the platter by hand while it was doing its duties, which was a blast... :lol:

Yes they are levels. It's a very good turntable.
