Hi, I've got a Rega DAC, currently running a Cambridge Audio Sonata DVD as the transport, but I'd like some suggestions for a replacement CD player, what does every one else use?

I use a Rega Apollo R, from both a sonic and aesthetic perspective, excellent.

I use a cheap ass dvd player connected via coax to the rega... normally I just rip new discs and play from the laptop. Not sure what additional benefits a fancy transport would bring at this stage, I used to have a Pioneers stable platter and might look again if one came up at the right price.

It's been said that any modern half decent DVD or Blu-ray player should be a stable (if slow to start) transport for CD's these days. I believe jitter, or the audible "effects" of this, are well sorted now and having simpler circuits in the control and data-streaming side must be a good thing? My old CD player has incredible complexity, wires everywhere and sub-boards by the dozen (almost) - no wonder it cost so much.

I concur that the Apollo R makes an excellent choice though, the DAC extending the capabilities of the base machine in a very positive manner..

Having tried that recently I would have to say it was not the case with my system - Samsung Blu-Ray was not as good a transport as some Sony CD players I also tried. Quite a big difference, the BD player was badly outclassed.

Cyrus do a 'budget' dedicated transport (CDT) that has received good reviews. Otherwise new dedicated transports can get very pricey. I would suggest a TEAC T1 used if the size is not a problem or better still the TEAC 500/700 which are half width. Any of these will murder a DVD as CD transport.

Thanks for that - fascinating how this should be so, but I had my suspicions ;)

I use an Arcam CD72 which works really well with the Rega

Once again, I think the CD72 was a great basic player in its own right to start with - and Arcam in fairness, were one of the first to really look at the exact job the transport side had to do, digital retrieval wise, and deal with it accordingly

You are right Dave, the CD72 sounds really good on its own but the Rega DAC eeks out even more performance. I would be curious to try a Rega CDP in the system sometime ;)

Oh, I think an Apollo R is worth another shout - er - shill, don't you?

Not shilling, like everyone else since the early 70's I have been using decimal currency  Anyhoo, if an Apollo or any other Rega player outperforms the CD72 then I would consider a change. Likewise the Cyrus transport mentioned above.

I use a Cambridge Audio Discmagic transport. They come up for auction occasionally at a reasonable price. I've changed the LED in the display (what a job that was!) from green to red to match the Rega amp and DAC.

Iīm using a Cambridge 340 C as a transport. I tryed a Sony DVD and there was not much differences. The Rega reclocks the incoming data, so jitter is not a problem anymore.I never tryed a fancy transport with the Dac, so I canīt tell you much more about the Apollo R as a transport. My Rega dealer says thatīs much better than other transports, but as a Rega dealer, he wants to make a sale!If I could afford, I would buy the Cyrus transport, because is dedicated!

I have a friend who is using a Meridian 506.20 with the Rega Dac, which he has just purchased, and the sound is amazing, a real step up from using the Meridian alone

I also have a Meridian 506.20 and they really are a super cd player for not too much money. If you can get hold of either the 506.20 or later 506.24 then I would highly recommend them

Good solid casework too - and I'm sure this helps?

Thanks Guys,
Food for thought there!

Clearly the best transport in this case is my Lyngdorf CD-1 which happens to be for sale :)

I would strongly recommend something like a Pioneer DV-717 or DV-737. I prefer non-reclocking DACs (more natural to me), and this does mean that transports are particularly important to my setup. I have used various generic DVD players, old Philips swingarm transports, Pioneer Stable Platter etc. & the 90s Pioneer players are the best to these ears. They are unusual in that they read CDs as DATA disks, buffer them into memory & re-read on error instead of applying error correction. This isn't supposed to be audible, but then differences between cables aren't either. ;) Jerry (JANDL100) was suitably impressed by his too. Best thing is these were Ģ650+ in the 90s, and can now be picked up for under Ģ50.
