COPLAND CD822 service/repair help

I love my Copland 822 CD player...but....recently picked up a fault whereby it starts making horrible crackle noises half way through a cd when warm. It needs some TLC and a service for sure. No idea what the isse is, could be caps degrading??, cd sled getting a bit sticky//, something else.

Anyhow can anyone recommend somewhere to do a good job on service repair? Used to use Chantry in Tuxford, they closed. I'm in west yorkshire...

Back when I had a CDA-288 the Teac mechanism developed a similar fault. I had to send it back to Absolute Sounds who charged around £250 to fit a new mech & courier it back. Good quality work but IIRC it took them about a month....

CD laser pick up has gone South or the traverse bars for the CD pick up need cleaning out and lubricating. But there is a lot more money to be made from replacing the whole mechanism instead of just the laser unit. It's also quicker. So many repair shops would be most willing to take on the job if they can get the mechanism.

Is the laser assembly still available for one of these? The high quality linear-drive Sony mech (as used in Marco's transport I believe) can go down, or at least become very dirty internally, and to replace I think you have to use a substitute and re-set up the electrics driving it IIRC. I admit they DO last a very long time...

I would say this uses a Sony KSS-213 based Mechanism.

Looking at the PCB in the picture there doesn't seem to be any adjustment potentiometers so have to assume there is a PCB mounted underneath the Mech for RF Amplification and Processing where there may be some adjustment pots. However these will almost certainly be surface mounted types which usually means they are for initial factory set up. The RF Amp IC and Servo Processor IC will be of the type that performs automatic adjustments every time the Tray is closed.
Thus it should just be a case of replacing the Mech. This will not though come with the under mounted PCB so this will have to be removed from the old Mech and fitted to the new one.
If you feel confident in doing this just make sure you are 'Anti-Statted'.

If you can post pics of your unit we can compare yours to the pic I found to make sure they are the same.

Once it starts to crackle, if you go back to the start of the Disc, does it stop crackling or continue?
If it stops then it points to the Spindle Motor. If it continues to crackle then it could be the Laser or the Processing electronics at fault, or the Spindle Motor again! Without the unit in front of me and a 'scope it's difficult obviously!
