Hi everyone,I just found an old Shure M75ED that i had forgotten about and thought i would give it a try. Got a new stylus and installed it. It has nice solid bass,smooth controlled mid range but it distorts on some high frequency's. Is this just how they were,does the stylus need break in time or is the cartridge more likely cattle trucked? apart from the distortion I really like its sound. Any advice would be gratefully received. Kind regards Richard.:scratch:

Sounds like it is not set up right. It's a smoothie up top - too smooth for some - anyways no cart should distort like that, not with a new stylus.

Should not distort at high frequencies, perhaps not set up properly, or damaged stylus, or poor non genuine stylus fitted.

Great cartridges, normally track extremely well.

I bought the first version of this, back in the 60's, because I couldn't possibly afford £40 the V15 cost. A bit like buying a Koetsu now..:eek:

Anyway, the M75ED would track a country lane without breaking up or distorting, so something is wrong with your's or the set up.

I've just recently bought one of those carts with a cheap after market stylus, sounded fine to me although I think I prefer the Denon DL-110 but there isn't an awful lot of difference between them.

I ran M75ED's for years, tried quite a few more expensive other brand cartridges, but went back to 75ED. Thought that I would try the M95ED, did not really find it an improvement, however, the M95HE was an improvement. This is a really nice cartridge.

I'm not a great Shure fan, but I quite liked the M75 ED and its brother the M91 ED.

I take it you are aware that these don't like too much tracking force or high mass arms. 1.5 to 1.75 grams should be more than enough with a genuine Shure stylus, if you are using more, that could explain the mistracking. Shure were probably the best tracking cartridges of their day.

I'd experiment with the VTA too.

Thanks everyone. Yes mine does have a generic stylus and it is fitted to a fairly high mass arm also the head shell is quite heavy. The tracking force is set at 1.5g. Will fit it to a light weight shell and re align it later tonight. My arm was tracking fine with the at95/hyper elliptical that was fitted prier to the shure but i would like the shure to work as it seems to sound so nice. Thanks again and kind regards all. Hi Richard. I used to run an AT95HE a couple of years ago and I'd be interested in your thoughts. I had mine fitted to a Linn LVX+/Thorens TD316 combo and I found it to be a bit of a giant killer. I wish I'd hung onto the little AT actually... :doh:

Try tracking a little higher bit to bit to see in the distortion settles. Aftermarket styli rarely track the same as originals. Don't be surprised is you go up to 2.5g!

I have an M75 body with generic M91ED stylus - look at the Dualparts shop on ebay for details.. The output is higher and the balance usefully brighter than the M75-ED (originals will be either worn or have corroded cantilevers making them a touch brittle - been there and done it :(). HOWEVER, the compliance of my sample is rather lower than the surviving M75-ED I have and it needs a good 1.5g to track and sound at its best. The compliance is low enough that 1.75g is fine as well. The original Shure stylus would all but collapse at this pressure.

Things have moved on in fairness, although if your arm is low enough mass and you want to hear what this era of Shures can really do, try to find a good working V15 T2. Mine has a "new" replacement Shure stylus and as well as having a superior quality diamond (shape and polish), the sound is lovely at 1g tracking and everything the 75-ED wanted to be. The "Era III" V15 didn't really come into its own until the HE stylus came along (red stylus housing) and I think, the MR version, which I have no experience of.

I know they have a reputation of being inconsistent, but really, the Me97XE should be in a different level of refinement entirely...

Hi there. In my humble set up i find that in comparing it to an AT95 with a standard elliptical stylus the stereo imaging is better the bass is much the same, pretty solid, the mid range seems smoother and more controlled but were it really scores is with its superb detail and much better end of groove tracking. well worth its fairly modest price. Thanks for that will be on the lookout for a v15. Regarding the distortion on mine i have checked with the vendor of my stylus and found out that instead of being 0.2 by 0.7 it is 0.3 by 0.7 and tracks at 2g. not good and i think it must be faulty. I am getting a refund and have sourced and orderd another one with the correct dimensions on the tip and which tracks between .75g to 1.5g as it should be. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. That pretty much sums up my findings too Richard. The HE stylus, which I bought from LPGear in the US incidentally, allowed the AT95 to produce some real 'WOW' moments in that system. I let it go when I sold the Thorens which I very much regret now as I have a Jelco arm coming for my SL1210 this week and I have a feeling it would have worked really well in it.

I have the M91ED with the Jica SAS stylus, and I found there was a little brightness until i got the support under the deck right. That is fixed, and now sounds great with good detail and no edge.

sorted this out now. The distortion was due to a poor quality stylus. Got a proper one now and it sounds just lush with superb bass extension and to my ears not short on detail. This cartridge to me displays many qualities that make vinyl the Superior sounding and preferred medium. Kind regards all Richard.

If you think that sounds good, wait till you try a Decca, ADC or a good Moving Coil. You'll be amazed!

yeah i bet. had an ortofon mc10 super years back but my then turntable wasn't really up to much. Cant really afford any exotic cartridges or turntables now or in the foreseeable future but maybe one day.:)
