Technics "studio" gear [1977-1980]

Anyone familiar with this stuff ? Dunno if it really was "studio" grade but I picked some up dirt cheap on eBay currently waiting for the courier to do their thing... Should be here Thursday.

Looks pretty nice stuff, just wondered if anyone had heard/used any of it ?

I've seen them a few times over the years, wanted to try them for so long but always too expensive thankfully I got lucky this time.

Its good stuff I have the se-9600 amp sh9010 grafix eq and st8080 tuner and was aimed at the pro market

I suspect it'll be very good, but as it didn't/couldn't sound like Naim, it would have been snooted down on at the time by us dealers :( As a general thing, use decent interconnects and speaker cables - without spending a fortune, such as Talk Electronics "3" speaker cable, and Mark Grant HD1000 (which I know and use) or this -

Which had positive vibes from Supreme dalek neil on his review site.

The equaliser may not be for you, but I bet it's a very good example of the breed too.

Must be where I'm going wrong! All my cabling is Van Damme with Neutrik connectors :D

Sold all my "hifi" cables a while back save for a couple of naca4 runs which come in handy should any unstable amps find themselves on my rack ;)

Van Damme tends to be sniffed at round these parts (and I still use 'em), so I thought I'd better play safe and vouch for the hideously expensive alternatives at £50 or so ;)

That cassette deck is a beast! The set I bought is missing the tuner & VU unit :( The included cassette deck is an RS-M85 which will likely be up for grabs as I don't own a single cassette & don't feel inclined to acquire any :D

IIRC the original UP-OFC [ultra-pure-oxygen-free-copper] could sound dull in the wrong system but its all UPLC-OFC [ultra-pure-linear-crystal-oxygen-free-copper] now which I thought was patented by Hitachi back in 80s ?

The tape deck was at the bottom with the plug against the glass door so thats smashed, the power amp turns on but has a few issues that need looking into, the preamps okay apart from a fair bit of paint loss & the graphic doesn't light up but may just be a blown power bulb.

I was so annoyed I just whacked it all straight on eBay as untested/sold as seen but will test it tonight now I've got over it :cool:

On the other hand, though, if you decide not to keep it, why not return it to the seller and demand a full refund? I think a case of idiocy like this deserves maximum fuss made, personally.

Its okay, I've been playing :eyebrows:

Power amp has a sticky relay and very noisy attenuators otherwise fine, both pre & EQ are working so its just a minor repair & scrap the tape deck.

Aside from bad packaging I cant fault the seller to be honest, he didn't want to send them but I twisted his arm.

It's well worth persevering with. i had a full set of this series a couple of years back eg pre amp, amp, equaliser, power meter, cassette deck and tuner. It actually performed really well. Technics did a 19 inch rack for it all to fit in and also made a really decent pair of speakers for it - can't remember the model number now but they were huge and sounded incredible from what i remember. i have not seen a pair of the speakers for sale for ages now, i expect a decent pair would sell for a fair old bit of wonga.
On the units where the cosmetic damage is not too bad they may well have survived relatively unscathed as the build quality was extremely good.

What is it with sellers and not packing things properly ?? :steam: It makes me really angry having been there myself... Technics have some nice past masters and some of there gear sounds really good accompanied by one of their eq's, and as someone else has pointed out with decent interconnects and speaker cable you'll be very surprised :)

I've got them making sweet music now :) Anyone that reckons Rega Ela's cant do bass have never heard them connected to these amps! Best described as subterranean :eek:

According to the brochure the speakers your thinking of are "SB-7070" .... Here's a crummy pic of the damaged tape deck:

It still works but the mech is quite noisy.

That was them. Quick search on google shows several images of them. Will have a look in my parts stash and see if i have a spare door for your cassette deck. I know I had one at one time but not sure if I brought it with me when we moved.

Wow, that would be something! I would pay handsomely for it sir :) last resort will be something similar fashioned out of acrylic.

I managed to find one tape from the 80's: "The sounds of nature/Ocean waves." I tell ya, the seaside's never sounded so good :lol:

Well, I've been listening to them all day... Certainly nice stuff, very well made & all of the controls feel silky smooth - Overall a real joy to use.

Bass is awesome the Ela's have never sounded like that! I thought the IMF's were back :hairmetal: Treble is okay but nothing to write home about, slightly harsh & etched IMO. No doubt they all need servicing which I expect would improve things considerably. I can also confirm the EQ is high quality as Dave suggested, large adjustments only have a small effect on the sound & switching it in/out of circuit with controls flat sounds the same to me so cant be that bad!

This is all with CD - I cant test the phono stage until my new [to me] TT arrives on Monday... Wish I didn't sell most of me vinyl :doh:

how did i miss this on ebay:doh:???? , i saw it after it ended ,, the seller was giving it away ,, should sound very nice , all well speced units and they fetch a premium when all in good order:):)

Edit: Just been looking at ebay. You got it all for £40! Wow! and sold it all for about £250 - pretty damn good going. And the Luxman for £50 "broken" because the stylus was broken. :cool:

Yeah sold the lot on eBay apart from the preamp which is going to a member here.

I usually buy faulty amps/cd players, repair them & then sell on but if a stone cold bargain turns up I wont refuse! To be fair the Technics & Luxman were the only bargains I've had in months...
