Jumble sale finds.....

I went to a jumble sale, last year I went to this same scout sale and some may remember, I got a Leak Stereofetic tuner, a Mullard pre/power set up and a GL 78 for £20.00. This year I made sure I was near the head of the queue and made a run for the electronics tables. Looked at the turntables, but only a Numark, had a look at the speakers and got 4 mint Gale 3010s for a tenner, caught my foot on a power supply and it turned out to belong to an Allen and Heath 1221 mixing desk which set me back another £15.

So I thought that was that and turned to leave and out of the corner of my eye I caught sight of a pair of speakers...... How much are these I asked? Oh a tenner said the chap in charge. So I'm now the very happy owner of a pair of Spendor BC1s :) W'hay

I regularly visit the five (yes 5) charity shops in my nearest town and have never found anything I want to buy. No decent LPs, CDs or electronics of any sort. If they offered me to take anything for free, I would decline.

As to Fetes and Boot Sales - nothing at all, except cheapo plastic 70s stack racks and Frank Ifield, Mrs.Mills and MFP LPs.

You certainly did NOT OVERPAY for a pair of BC1's.....a TENNER???....

BARGAIN!!!! - they are incredible speakers born from the BBC's post-war research into loudspeaker design on which most high - end models of monitor currently take their cues..

I do occasionally get a decent batch of vinyl so I cant complain too much, a good example being 9 queen albums in mint nick for £9. :cool: I also managed to find an old radiogram, but the valve amps inside were properly mashed and not worth the effort in restoration as they were completely and utterly rusted to high hell :( But, decks, nice amps, speakers, etc always seem to elude me. Bah!

I reckon the clue is this- Wakefield ( no offence), or any other northern town for that matter. Antiques Roadshow is the same. There has to have been money in an area in the first place for people to be discarding what was once expensive stuff. If you look at where most top notch stuff is now for the bargains of the future its home counties/ south etc. with the exception of the odd major northern city. I once lived in Beckenham, the charity shops there were like branches of Narvey Nichols, compare that to where I live now. Still the scenery is better.

I live near Croydon and the charity shops now get record valuers in to appraise their vinyl. so no bargains here anymore...:(

Had a discussion with SWHDWISWICTMACSLMT (that’s She who happily does what I suggest when it comes to matters audio, cos she loves music too) :lol: and we have decided on the final disposition of the BC1s. For a while now the edit suite has had a pair of TASCAM VX-5 active monitors (eBay £60 with flight cases) and a pair of the mk1 made in Japan by JVC Realistic Minimus sevens (£7.50 in a Cash Convertors sale). When we want to check the final sound on larger monitors we can patch to the Tannoy MG/ Lockwood Academies in the living room but, that involves running to the other room to check the mix.(£410.00 on Flea Bay, Oi Likes a Baargin, I do indeed):)

So after a full refurb, the BC1s are going to do what they were designed to do and be the main monitors on the edit suite. I’m now looking for a pair of Quad 50Es or a pair of HH AM 8/12 monoblocks, as they would seem to be the natural partners in a pro audio setting. There are some HHs on Flea Bay for £350 but I’ll keep looking for a while first.:)

And this is in Chiswick? I thought all the bargains in london were gone (although I guess they are because the lucky first person to see stuff, like yourself snaps it all up ..)

I need to get out more and perhaps to some kind of richer areas too - in hackney etc and all that there are too many poor people all too aware of the value of stuff cos they're on ebay all the time too. Need to find some older, slower lifestyle people with jumble sales.
