Celestion 120s - Worth repairing?

Hello,
I confess I am not a hifi afficianado but I would be grateful if someone could offer some advice on some Celestion 120s. They must have been in the family for 25 years but have now developed a fault. One of the drivers buzzes at certain frequencies and sometimes 'cracks' when pushed harder. I wonder if it would be worth replacing one or both drivers and if so, where I might find them - it's quite bewildering for the ignorant. I would prefer it if I didn't need to modify the cabinet. Would it be possible to replace them with beefier (all this high tech talk!) speakers of the same dimensions? If it helps, the figures I have are:
Cutout diameter 137mm
Mounting holes 110mm apart (155mm diagonally)
Overall depth 70mm approx
Weight 1.3kg

Sounds like the drivers will need a rebuild. Not really worth it unless the sentimental value is very high as even in working order these are only worth about fifty notes. Breaking and selling as spares probably your best option. No doubt others will disagree.

First thing to try is rotate the offending driver 180° - The suspension could be sagging causing the voice coil to rub.

Ah well - it looks like the end of the road then. I tried turning the speaker through 180° but to no avail. I shall start looking for some local replacements on ebay. Many thanks for your help.

I'd hang onto the Ditton 120s. They are now a rare classic model and sound remarkably good. The distorting bass driver may well be salvageable by realigning the rear spider, this requires some skill or professional assistance though. You might be lucky and find a replacement on eBay, but they aren't common.

I think overpowering the speakers may have caused the problem and that I might need some larger speakers anyway. I didn't realise until now that speakers were repairable! Perhaps I'll put them away as a project for the future.
