i use a Vincent pre with a naim nap90 power amp
with no problems and i enjoy my music through my system
but i have read in the past that you should not use a non naim pre with a naim power amp though ok the other way round.

why is this the case and does any one else use pre non naim pre's with naim power amps?
as my system works fine i can not help but think such advice is :mental:

The Naim 90 is their worst power amp, basically the power amp section of a Nait 3.
Get rid and get something better ;)

I recently sold mine along with my nac 62 and hicap and now run a Croft pre/power. The upgrade was significant to say the least...

i've heard the same thing about the nap90
croft is my family name,do you think i would get a discount? :)
joking aside, croft amps are out of my budget though i had the chance of buying
a audio analogue donizetti power amp but as said,i like the sound of my set up. :)
just do not understand the warnings given against using non naim pre's

I got my crofts off ebay and saved about £550 on the pair. They don't come up often. I just kept my eyes peeled.

If you like your set up then that's cool.

The original question wasn't about changing but asking if anyone else uses a non Naim pre and why is it not advised.

There is a lot of nonsense talked on forums and not using a Naim pre with Naim power is one of them. I have done this many times over the years with a variety of pres and all has been absolutely fine. Obviously, this won't give the result Naim intend but if the owner is happy, then all is good. Nothing untoward will occur.

It is more difficult to use a Naim pre as they have to be powered from a Naim power-amp or Naim power supply.

Carry on enjoying your Vincent and Naim.

Not just on forums but in the literature too. Never owned any Naim stuff (too pricey for me, even s/h!) but I have always wondered if the compatability issue was bollocks. What about Naim pre-amps with non-Naim power amps?

Well, it is possible but more difficult as the pres have to be powered from a power-amp or a dedicated Naim power supply. Can be done though.
