View Full Version : Time to EXPEDIT...

Marco

Inspired by this video from Ikea, and as, like Harry, vinyl records are beginning to take over my listening room (and bedroom), EXPEDIT units have now taken residence, chez-Marco:

Just need to build the buggers now and fill 'em. That will take place this week, so look out for pics of them in situ in the listening room, along with new pics of my system as it currently stands! :)

Great units unless you have to cut them to fit into a loft conversion. Piece of piss to build and so good you'll want to buy more of them and more LPs. The little fabric boxes are brilliant for cables and stuff.

The shelves have been fitted wrong way round! Long planks across braced by shorts in between and it won't collapse in that fashion. Some triangular metal braces at the back corners should make it totally collapse proof. Use these to secure to wall even better.

I have my rack with the long shelves running horizontal and the spacers vertical
It did come with a angle bracket for fixing the top to a wall , thinks I had better fit that before loading it up any further ;)

That's exactly what I intend to do!

Pics will follow at the weekend, after shelves have been built and filled. I'm currently clearing the floor of records, making room for the shelves to be put in. 1000s of CDs have to be sorted out separately, too! :)

I use a smaller (4x2) Expedit with legs as record storage and the equipment table.

Quick "tip": Get some L-shaped plastic strip, about 15mm / 1/2" both sides, from your local DIY place, cut to size and stick across the back of the shelving in such a way as the records butt up against the vertical face (the flat face being behind, to the back) and you have a nice back stop to line up the fronts with the shelving.

Hi Peter,

Got a link to the specific product you're referring to, so I can see it and find out its official name? That would be easier than trying to work out what "L-shaped plastic strip" is. Cheers! :)

If you get rid of the skirting board you can butt the Expedit to the wall - the unit is ultra secure with the supplied fixings. I've had mine for a few years now and it's rock solid.

Lol - more like INCREASED, with all the shite I've thrown out! Although not quite finished yet (still sorting out piles of CDs into categories), it's looking really good, and the added bonus is that I think the new 'wall of music' (EXPEDIT shelves full of vinyl and BENNO racks full of CDs - both from Ikea) has improved the acoustics of the room!! :eyebrows:

I'd thought of that being a possibility, but it could've easily gone the other way, too... All in all, however, it's a nice 'free' upgrade to have achieved, along with a tidy room and a much more easily accessible music collection. I'd call that a 'win-win'! :champagne:

Hi Dave,

Sorry, I missed this before!

At the moment, only very loosely in alphabetical order. I lost the will to live to put any more detail into it, epecially the classical stuff, which at the moment is only stacked in terms of composer - not even alphabetically or in terms of symphony, but I'll get round to doing that later :)

Lol... One of the best things about big Tannoys is that they work very well in small rooms. As you can see from looking at my room, you can place them flat against the back wall and right into the corners, and they still sound fab (with no bass boom whatsoever). Indeed, this is where they sound best, even in a much bigger room!

In situ at Scalford, a few years back, in a room about five times the size of mine:

Lol... Nah, we only live in a little lodge house. The rooms are not big, but they are nicely formed (in terms of having very solid walls and angles/wooden beams to break up standing waves), so the acoustics are excellent :)

I bet the sound pressure level in that room is thunderous...

Honestly, you're not wrong. The low-frequency visceral impact pins you to the wall, with suitable material... If you like genuine 'trouser-flapping' bass, with rock or full-scale orchestral music, you'd love it!! :eyebrows:

Marco, what are the shelves behind the sofa?

Hi John,

I believe that they were once part of the BENNO range at Ikea, but you can no longer get that type of shelving. If you look closely, you'll also see some of the same racks filled with cassette tapes on top of the current BENNO CD racks.

The tall floor-standing CD units, shown beside my EXPEDIT racks, are what has replaced the other BENNO stuff :)

Marco.

Macca
02-03-2013, 11:38
Looking good Marco - I'm guessing you previously had most of that music in another room?

One thing I was wondering - have you never considered having a listening room built either as a seperate building or as an extension?

Marco
02-03-2013, 11:46
Hi Martin,

Cheers, dude. No, it was ALL in there before, stacked in various piles on the floor!!

That was my reason for starting this thread with the Ikea video, as I was in a similar situation to the dude in the video and needed to do something about it! The idea of a listening room in an extension is good, and something I might do one day.

However, one of the main reasons why I get such a good sound in my current room is because of how the room is shaped/built. Therefore, any extension would have to be as solidly built and in the same style as the main body of the house (dating from 1887), otherwise we wouldn't get planning permission, as the property is listed :)

Some kind of 'modern box', just tagged on, simply wouldn't work on any level...

Marco.

Macca
02-03-2013, 11:51
I did wonder if it was listed. Sometimes they will let you build a modern annex providing it is 'sympathetically linked' with the main building. Planners seem to like the juxtaposition of old and modern if tastefully done. Personally I'd try and blend it in - either way it would be pricey as they would want top dollar materials used. Not that you would use anything less of course ;)

Barry
02-03-2013, 19:47
Wow - that's much better. I was always concerned about the piles of LPs you had leaning against the wall. Well done! :)

How have you catalogued your collection? By genre or purely alphabetically?

PS I take it Tabatha has given her full approval. :eyebrows:

Marco
02-03-2013, 22:29
Cheers, Barry. Yup - it has made a massive improvement! :)

At the moment the vinyl is categorised purely alphabetically, but that will change shortly
