For all the AOS members who cannot make it to the Sound + Vision show, Bristol next week or those who don't "do" shows I am offering some of my show "deals" prior to next Friday when the show starts, the first deal is a DIY mains lead set consisting of 1.5 metres of LAPP Olflex Classic Mains Cable with 2.5mm thick conductors, quality german cable, my MCRU ref. UK mains plug with silver plated fuse and a martin kaiser quality german IEC connector.

The set is offered at £10.00 with postage within the UK at a cost of £2.00 per set.

I've used the Lapp cable to make up some Rega clone mains cables, and its actually a better spec than what Rega use.

Same spec on paper, but slightly thicker, maybe a revision in the manufacturing process, dunno.

A tenner for a rega clone, its a complete no brainer. All brio-r and DAC owners should snap these up. My gear loves them and for less money than can be dropped on the pub floor they're a snip.

I made up quite a few of these sets and took them to the show, sold the lot so have just ordered another 200 metre roll of LAPP cable and will add the deal to my website shortly. All orders for this set will be sent out today for anyone who was waiting for one.

If you mentions AOS in the comments column when paying I will put some rather useful silver plated crimp sleeves in with your set to cover the wire ends when you attach them to the connectors, normally 95p each!

There has been a slight adjustment to postage as I set it too low originally by mistake.

I dont suppose you have a picture as to what the crimp sleeves look like do you, I still havent done nothing with the lead I brought on sunday, was wondering how the cable fitted to the IEC end.

excellent

the cable is 3 core 2.5mm with tinned copper outer braid, the braid needs twisting and wiring into the mains -plug earth pin along with the earth wire itself, slightly fiddly but easy after you do the first one, a bit of insulating tape or heatshrink around the braid once you have twisted it together helps. it may not all fit in the earth pin so some of the strands may need trimming off, usually about 2/3rd's goes in ok

the other end the braid is trimmed off and just the live, neutral and earth connects to the iec

hope that helps

the crimping sleeves are simply silver plated copper tubes that push over the ends of the bare wires before you fit them into the iec and mains plugs, then the screws from the connectors tighten onto the sleeves to form a better termination than bare wires alone

there was a thread by northwest on aos a while ago showing how to wire it up but I cannot find it!

You're right! a bit fiddly but got there in the end,those crimping sleeves are very handy:)

yes mate bargain at 95p each, same price WBT charge

what about a decent fuse to go in the plug too, £35 each :ner:

oh and there is another secret weapon a filter to go in the iec, now that would be a very potent mains lead indeed.:)

Hi:

Not being used to wiring IEC, I'm not clear how you fit the IEC cable. The cable is 12mm in diameter overall and the fairly rigid plastic sleeve has a 7mm aperture. Cutting away the outer transparent plastic would only reduce the diameter to 10mm. Do I just discard the plastic sleeve? There's no sign of any copper crimping sleeves.
