Hi all.

I am looking for some attenuators to go between my pre and power amp. Looking for a value of 6db or 10db.

Looking for Goldenjacks if possible.

Anyone got any knocking about?

Cheers
Joe

Joe, I have a set of Rothwells if you are interested.

I have a pair of -14dB golden jacks, practically brand new in packing. £20 inc. postage.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and your RCAs allow it, you could add the attenuating resistors yourself for a few pence. Also means less connections to get in the way of the mooosic.

Just a thought.

Cheers guys.

Thanks Martin, this is just an experiment at the moment so I'd rather get something easy to plug in and out.

I'll have a think about the 14db ones, I think they might be too high though, I'll get back to you.

What db are the Rothwells, Bernie?

Cheers
Joe

Looks like they're 10dB Joe.

It's certainly a feasible solution. I've used the very nice Grave Science -10db attenuated interconnects which include high quality resistors within the cable assembly itself. This could easily be replicated by a DIYer. I previously made up a short pair of -10db links for use between the pre-out and main-in connectors on my amps, and they worked very nicely indeed.

I've made attenuated interconnects with about 7.5db attenuation. I used Welwyn RC55Y 0.1% metal film resistors which are available from RS and Farnell and are not that expensive.

10k in line with 7K32 to gnd will give you 7.48db
10k in line with 10k to gnd will give you 6db
10k in line with 4k64 to gnd will give you 9.98db

Nice work. That looks damn similar to mine, including your choice of solid core Cat5/6 wire :)

Cheers. Yep, made them up from solid cat 5 a few years ago. Bit of a faf to braid and terminate but they deaf sound better than you'd ever expect. Cheaper than fancy cables too as they were made from using the off cuts if infrastructure cabling.

Worth a try if you're bored for a couple of hours :D

Anyone know if "Goldenjacks" is run by the guy who has the importing of baseball caps as his main business? I have a pair of attenuators that were built into VDH plugs - bought them years ago and can't remember who I got them from. Need a second pair for my phono stage and would like to get the same ones if possible.

There was a chap on this forum that used to make these too. I bought a pair from him.
