Anyone ever wonder what became of Betamax?

The Betamax system did not disappear - in fact it still exists in digital form as HDCAM SR.

This is it's first incarnation - as Betacam SP - a broadcast machine with AFM sound costing around £25000 in 1989 - interior shots included.

You know, Betamax and VHS made good early digital recorders - Hitachi at least did a VHS one and the Sony PCM-F1 is a legend, the A-D/D-A unit out-performing sonically all the early CD players (why were these players hobbled so?)..

I still have a good few domestic Betamax tapes and a later Sony to play them on. I remember a clunky old Sanyo machine running for many many thousands of hours, only needing belts every few years (it was an electrically cruse machine, using loads of heavy duty belt driven pulleys for its work)

It's Sony 'SL6300' i have, i'd like another but they are pretty rare these days.
