Must confess I'm a real sucker for buying multitools and penknives - dread to think how many over the years... One I use mainly is a Gerber Diesel (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gerber-Diesel-Multi-Tool-Knife/dp/B003CP14JQ) - great bit of kit (preferred choice of the SAS apparently as you can open the pliers single handed.) Recently bought a few bits and bobs from Tru Utility too - great little multitool (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000RT1NP0/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00) that includes mini pliers and scissors which is important to me. Probably not that durable long term but only used occasionally attached to my keyring for when I don't have anything else to hand.

That Gerber must be expensive for what it can do, whereas the Tru Utility is worth buying to have around and likely pay for itself in one use
(I've got one of these things somewhere, never clocked the usefullness...........)

Agreed - it doesn't even have a trouser press.

Despite that, I do possess a Victorinox Swiss Army knife that has all the essentials: two good and sharp blades; bottle opener and tin opener, both with screwdriver tips; corkscrew; leather stitching needle; scissors and tweezers.

It has been all over the word with me. Apart from opening tins and beer bottles, I have used it to perform minor surgery removing a deep splinter from someone's thumb in Mali and minor 'surgery' on a Suzuki 'Landcruiser' in Kenya.

Aye, me too. Just ordered a Leatherman Charge tti. Bit pricey but quality costs. I like the look of the Victorinox multitool too.
