View Full Version : Crossover resistor replacement

I grabbed an almost immaculate pair of Mission 733s yesterday for a song, but they both have a blown resistor in each crossover on the tweeter side of the circuit - the drivers are fine.

My question: The current resistors are 7w 3.3 ohms. The nearest I can get locally are 10w 3.3 ohms. Is there any detrimental audio effect to replacing a 7w with a 10w, or is it merely a 'maximum' wattage rating for the resistor?

Cheers. :)

Sonically, it will be fine.

Maybe Mission sized the component to act as a "fuse" to protect the tweeter?

Short answer: It will be fine :)

I've serviced a few "vintage" speakers that had 3W resistors...

Thanks chaps!

Before the resistors blew, they got so hot that the terminal plate actually melted! The drivers are perfectly fine though. Mission obviously thought that it might be a usefully placed resistor. Apparently the overheat was due to an amp that went critical before it died. :)

Cheers again, I'll grab them tomorrow.

Mmmm, drivers are dead too. Never mind, I have some replacements on their way to me. :)

The higher power will be better ;)

If youcan find some Mills or Muundorf resisters all the better as they are noninductance.

I have Mills 12 watters in mine, very good they are.

Another Vote for Mills non inductive wire wound

Yup
I used. The 12 watters too.
I can't say it makes a world of differece but I do think it dosent hurt to use better parts when possable.

Well being none magnetic, Copper leads & tighter tolerance than the ones i removed are an improvement alone..

Isn't it likely that the manufacturer will have factored any resistor inductance into the crossover design and that changing to low inductance resistors will alter the speaker characteristics?

tbh Geoff i cringe a bit when i see a Resistor in a X-Over! i have a second pair of speakers i use with em but the main speakers don't.

Nowt wrong with some nice Duelund 'cigarillos'... ;)

I find high wattage resistors make no difference, even in the bass section. As Marco said the Duelund resistors are the best... Look bloody odd but they do make a very good difference. If not those then Mills are fine.

The Dulands may take some time to get.
They look to be hand rolled and may have trobble getting through custom s.

The tubes are sealed, not rolled. What you might be seeing is the sticker on them as the edge lifts a little.

Anyways, there are places in the states who stock them. :)

Joe - I think you may have missed the humour in Jeff's post about hand-rolling and customs!

Oh... bugger.

I'm not with it today.. LOL

£12.50 for a 5w resistor - good god! :stalks:.

Is there a reason why this type of resistor would be preferable to a metal foil type resistor, generously over-rated to avoid thermal resistance variations in an x-over?. I thought carbon and graphite resistors had undesirable noise characteristics, which is why they are not used so much nowadays

Just asking...
