This really does my head in. Marks on the carpet due to sofa castors. What do you folks do to alleviate the pressure on your carpets?

Those cup things you can buy for the castor to sit in are too big which has a tendency to tip the cup over to one side with heavily underlaid carpets which in turn makes a bigger mess than just plonking your sofa straight on the carpet!

I read somewhere that if you leave an ice cube to melt in the indentation then hoover up it pulls out the 'dent' although I've never tried it myself.

Putting a Tea towel over marks then applying a steam iron with full steam lifts them but it's the damage to the carpet & underlay i worry about with castors. I want to avoid that.
