FS- Sony TA F6B Integrated Amp

Hi Guys,

for sale is my Sony amp which is a bit of a rare amp from about 1978 (see link below).

I bought this from e-bay.de last August but unfortunately despite it being advertised as having 'klang' sound and in mint condition it arrived broken.

I sent it down to Henry, AKA toprepairman on the wam, who repaired the small PCB on the top left behind the volume knob (see photo).

He re-capped this PCB and partially re-capped and repaired the PLPS at the same time.

The amp is in very good condition cosmetically and it works fine and sounds very good indeed, it has both MM & MC phono boards and a headamp.

The amp is a joy to use, I've the partner tuner and it drives my Proacs with ease.

There are a few problems with it however as is to be expected with an amp of this age and complexity.

Both of the VU Meters are shot.

The right hand one is completely knacked, apparently someone tried to repair it previously by soldering the lamp into the lamp holder but they only succeeded in completely ruining the meter.

The left hand meter works and the needle deflects as it should but the lamp is dim so both meters really need to be renewed but they're not easy to find although I do have the Sony part nos for anyone interested.

Those faulty meters don't have any effect on the amp at all.

There are also a couple of other problems, one is that the on off switch is a bit dodgy at times sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but I don't use it to turn the amp off, I simply use the wall socket switch to turn the amp off.

The other problem is that sometimes the amp loses a channel but that is down to the selector switch (Aux 1, Aux 2 & Phono) a wiggle of the switch soon cures that problem.

The amp sounds fantastic to me and the MC phono board is excellent I've been using it with a Denon DL-110 and it is as good as the Croft basic pre-amp that I had recently.

This Sony amp has replace both the Croft and a Sugden A21ap power amp in my system and while I'm not saying that those amps weren't any better than the Sony, IMHO there wasn't a great deal between them , certainly not enough to justify keeping nearly £800 worth of amps.

I have recently bought another amp so the Sony is now up for grabs.

I'm looking for £300 plus postage to a UK postcode, the amp is fairly heavy but postage should be around the £20 mark.

I'm also happy to post this abroad, I don't have the original box but it will be well packed for posting.

International buyers should obtain a quote for postage but to countries on mainland Europe and the likes of Germany and Italy etc the cost will be in the £35 region.

I have a copy of the user manual in French, German & English which will be included in the sale.

Payment by cash on collection from Glasgow, PPG, BACs or cleared personal cheque.

Some models also had the experimental heat pipes method of cooling instead of the traditional heatsinks. Great performers, but few were ever capable of fixing the SMPS if it went faulty. I was one of the very few who could, so I got lumbered with their repairs from all the Lasky's branches. That's why it stuck in my memory.

Thanks, yes the PLPS is a big problem with these amps, basically the electronics inside gets cooked as I'm sure you know.

One has just recently gone for 500 euros on ebay.de, Hungarian seller.

Disappointed that this amp hasn't gone to an AOS member, it really is a fantastic amp despite it's age.

I think £300 was a bit optimistic tbh..

btw: id have thouht they were more 1977 as the Elcaset 'EL7' sported the same dull brush finish.

Don't think so André, I've seen these amps go regularly for £300 and one recently went for 499 euro in the end it went for £255 so not far away from my original valuation.

Six of them sold in the same week just before Christmas and not one of them sold for less than mine, I think.

There's been an A7B on sale for 900 euro for the past three months, different amp though, and the A7B pre-amp has been on sale for a while in the range £450-£600.

There's a German Hi-Fi site got an A7B for sale at 1600 euros.

I'm surprised at the apparent lack of interest in the tuner thus far.

Now that is for sale bang on the money especially having been re-capped.

The Audiolab 8000A I've used for years was running below its best, as the man who services my amplifiers told me.
He offered me a very good price for it, so rather than have it serviced and sell it I accepted the offer.
The only problem with the Sony was a noisy tape monitor switch, which a squirt of Servisol switch cleaner solved.

The bass end, the open top and its smoothness have all impressed me.
The Spendor BC1s sound superb.
No hint of harshness which was what I was getting with the 8000A.
