View Full Version : Ever have what seems like the simplest project just go horribly wrong?
Seemed pretty straight forward.
Soldering a mini female XLR connector to Canare star quad.
I have been able to unbraid the shield and use it for ground and solder it to the tiny left pin,I have been able to solder the 2 white 21 awg wires to the top pin and the 2 blue wires to the last pin on the right.
On the Rean connector one of the pins broke, after soldering the switch craft and sliding up the body it pushed a bubble in the jacket because it was so tight and would not screw over the connector.
The mini XLR just was not made to easily support 15 awg but I am not giving up just yet.
Any advice?
The cable I was using is just to large to really make it fit so I ordered one of these.
Anything smaller and my old eyes just can't see it anymore, I need+ 4 reading glasses to solder and it strains my eyes.

Well, I did it 3dx's a charm!
I had to modify the mini XLR to get the huge cable to fit but it all worked out ok and sounds fantastic!
This was very tuff to build, Even the Amphethol gold 1/4 inch stereo connector went together tightly.
As you can see it is much larger than the factory cable with far bigger and better conductors inside.
18 awg. or 0.82 mm conductors when combined And the return conductor is just huge using the large copper shield.
0.82 mm L /0.82 R/ and a huge return wire easily 3x larger than the R&L channel wire.
The jack releases from the phones a little tight,it takes a little wiggle and a heck of a pull with the release button depressed but I'm not using these as portable phones, they are my main phones on the home system so this cable will remain unless the Vandamme is better and at 62 ohms really need to be on a headphone amp. for portable phones I use the 35 ohm Ultrasone HFI 780 they are closed for better isolation.
The AKG Q701's are so good I can give the old Superex proB a much deserved break.
I can't wait to get the Vandamme cable, So I can do a head to head comparison.

It's the Blue one,smaller than the factory one,the one I made is the big one.
This is the cable used but it doesn't tell the size of the conductors just the drain wire.

It will take a few days to run in the new VD cable then I will do a head to head shoot out between all 3.
Wow! almost no one has responded to a thread for a difficult cable build.
Maybe I should have included some pictures poop or asked what brand toilet paper you use ? Then sneak in a question about headphone cables...

The install cable is good for its designed use but spofc star quad I would feel best for your use if it fits!

It only talks about stranding.
This cable dose not seem suited fore long runs with head phones.
Wow, wire dose make a Hell of a sonic difference but when to thin of wire is used over a 7m run I didn't think it would change things this much.
The cable I ordered really messes with the bass, makes the recording sound thin and grainy when bass is present and although there is still a wide sound stage it has no depth.
Overall everything sounds bright at times it seems more detailed but that is because the lower end is very much suppressed. Any one else ever hear such a radical difference?

Conductor Material Bare silver plated ultra pure oxygen free copper wire
Stranding 1 x 0.20mm
Material Bare ultra pure oxygen free copper wire
Stranding 6 x 0.20mm

a 0.2mm conductor is 32AWG, which is certainly quite fine!. The resistance is <85ohms/km, so a 7m run should have a resistance of about 0.6ohms - not too much I would think.

I would have never understood there breakdown.
I wouldn't even choose this wire for inter connects unless the run was very short,better stuff out there but it would be good for wiring a panel.
or mini microphone like a lapel mic.
