You are quite right in thinking this way. Also the amount of spelling mistakes sometimes make you re-read.

Of course time changes the way people use language, but these days it seems acceptable to not even use punctuation. This can result in re-reading more than once.

It makes me think that the English language isn't taught in school these days.

Punctuation is quite useful. Just plain lazy not to use it
We have almost beaten people who LOCK CAPS. Now there are others who don't capitalise at all
I have named the mistakes my other half uses as "Layzos" -spellchecker what spellchecker ?
Sometime I have no idea what she is going on about

Don't even start me! I have 15 yo step son and a 16 yo duaghter. In their recent maths exam (part of their GCSE's) one of the question was to draw a line 5cm long. They had a ruler, some paper and a pencil. Should that be a challenge for a 15yo? possibly a 6yo but a 15yo??????:steam:

My daugter hates Tuesdays because she has a double (just over 2hrs) of RE!!! As the timetable runs over 2 weeks, she has 3 hrs total in week 1 and 1 hr total in week 2. :steam::steam::steam::steam::steam:

Why o why do we spend nearly 5 hrs over 2 weeks teaching RE when the basic maths, english and general abitily to think and act in the real word is just totally out of scope. As a nation.....we are doomed i'm afraid!:steam::steam:

I went to a less than perfect school but I think it was a good one, from what I have seen of others.

The state schools are a disgrace and the curriculum is an embarrassment. The whole education system needs to be privatised and the government, particularly local government which is crammed full of trots, needs to be taken completely out of the equation.

For GCE we had to learn propositional calculus. RE was considered a soft lesson because it was one of the few undemanding subjects.

We are fighting at least a couple of generations that came up behind us without a strong foundation in proper English. Even some of our younger teachers have fairly poor grammar and spelling, so what hope the pupils?

I'm all for the essentials of English and Maths being taught to their full extent. I would go further and say that they should be mandatory up to and including GCSE for all pupils.

As for bizarre writing styles, my IT Technician writes English as if German, in other words he capitalises all his nouns :eek:

Having tired of banging my head against the wall with regard to spelling, I have cast my eye onto the equally annoying trait of not knowing when to use compound words.

I've lost count of the number of times I have read about turn tables in this forum.
It's turntable FFS!!!

It goes with out saying that the lack of use of compound words makes it quite difficult to read posts where this occurs (and yes, the mistake is deliberate).

Walked down part of Edgware Road, London a few months ago and no one was speaking English, or if they were it was in a form I could not understand. Also could not read some of the shop signs. It was mid morning and I and Mrs Jazzbones were stone cold sober... real weird sensation as we were not aware that we had been on a plane and landed somewhere else outside of the country.
