FS: Technics SL-1210 with upgraded power supply

I can already feel Marco's stare, but my SL1210 is up for sale...

Excellent condition with virtually unused original Technics arm.

The power supply is an upgraded regulator (LM317 using Velleman kit from Maplin) inside the deck fed by an external transformer in a box made by me.

I have the original box.

I have been very happy with the sound but I think the Lenco has more potential and selling the Technics will (hopefully) make me get on and build a plinth for the Lenco.

Asking £250 collected or insured shipping on top.

Also, Origin Live Rega armboard £25.

I assume by that you mean the Scottish deck. Indeed. I do think it can sound good with a proper drive system though.

Btw, I meant to ask, what prompted you to obtain a Techy - was it anything to do with some of the incoherent ramblings on here, or the result of far more sensible research? :eyebrows:

To be fair, I think that was still making the best of a bad job. Poor motor running at a lowish speed. I got great results using a Michell Orbe motor driving the outer rim, but having an Orbe in the loft to make an LP12 sound good didn't make any sense!

It was a number of things. Needing something cheap but good to keep me going while doing the Lenco plinth. Reports from yourself and others that the Technics might fit the bill. In fact, the time it took for you to post your findings contributed as I couldn't wait, I thought I'd find out what the fuss was about for myself.

My opinion is that it's not the best deck in the world, but it is comparable to other decks costing several times the price new. Sort of the RB250/300 of turntables. I'd certainly take it over a new LP12.

Indeed! I still think that low-mass belt-drives in flimsy plinths are fundamentally broken no matter what you do to them. The key to a turntable reproducing music accurately (with minimal coloration), in my experience, is in the design of the motor unit, drive system and plinth; only rim, idler, direct-drive, and high-mass belt-drives in suitable plinths get it right, IMO.

Erm, yes, sorry about that! I tend to go into lots of detail and think carefully about what I'm writing when I report on things like that, so one big thread on the subject takes some time to do and to type up. In the end I achieved the same thing from the cumulative content of my numerous posts on the 1210 throughout the forum. I'm glad that some of it was useful :)

I rate Mark Baker's own designs but my view is that a Rega will always be a Rega, no matter how much you 'polish' it.

Incidentally, are you still using Mana? I don't hear very often now from JW.
