Are T/T power supplies interchangeable ?

Have a Power supply for a Garrard 301,( different connections accepted)
can I use this to power my Alphason Sonata ?

After a quick mooch on tinternet it seems to be not compatible at all.

The Sonata uses 2 Premotec motors as found in some Linn and Regas and others.

That means there are quite a lot of different power supplies available for the Alphason.

Have a wurd with Gordon at Stamford Audio, the Mose: Hercules II' should work with the 'Sonata'..I recon you could shift the '301' supply straight away..

Wow what quick replies, everyone must be keeping warm up by their computer.
Regarding contact its a 5pin din. The deck has only a on/of button so I guess that this one is designed for a seperate P/s.
I't's really about just trying to get it up and running without too much cost.

Ps garrard P/s is a keeper

Have you got a pic with the bottom off, you should be able to run the deck without the 'Atlas' supply..

There is a very cheap way of getting it running but you would need to be into a bit of diy. If you don't have the knowledge or experience with mains leccy then you could quite easily become dead so don't do that.

If you don't come accross a power supply that will plug straight in to the Alphason then you are going to have to get something such as the Hercules with the appropriate cable.
Or get someone qualified to sort you out with a simple circuit, such as the early Linn/Rega/Thorens ones. It is only a resistor to drop the voltage and a cap for the phase shift.

The Alphason will run straight off the mains or at least mine used to without the Atlas power supply but it will only run at 33 and a bit rpm. That is how the turntable used to arrive from the dealer if you hadn't paid the grand sum for the Atlas.

Best thing you could do would be to take some pics of the connectors and with the bottom off it.
There is a possibility that there is a supply board under there.

Trefor i had an early one direct to mains. I don't understand why you cannot get your later one working direct to mains tho.

Mine was not an early one it was the one with the small metal plaque on the top plate at the right front. It definitely ran straight from the mains as I never had the Atlas.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the replies. I had assumed because of the 5pin din and lack of speed switching that the T/t must have run from a Seperate p/s.
So I will see if I can sort out a appropriate mains lead.

Check first what you are plugging mains into. You might blow the crap out of something.

Yeah I am not happy about just plugging it in either.
But on the inside edge at the back near the 5pin din plug there is a small board of components ( obviously mean nothing to me)
So I was assuming this might be the electronics that stop it going up in smoke.
But yes I am still concerned.

The 5 pin implies it used some external PSU, like with 4 separate phases + a gnd return. The simplest internal psu option would just be a resistor to drop the voltage and a capacitor to generate the phase shift for the 2nd motor phase, for each motor. So the external psu could be very simple indeed, no more than 4 parts and some wires.

Yes Simon but we need to see if there is Phase caps & voltage drop resistors inside. It can then be wired up for mains use..

Well the orange pastel is obviously an old film cap probably a polyethylterraphylate cap or a dipped popypropylene cap. The value will be 0.22uf. The blue thing I have no idea! ;-)
it could be time to remove the lid, put the cart guard on. tape the platter to the top of the deck and flip her over gently.
