View Full Version : Removing Technics Tonearm

O.K. My Jelco tonearm has arrived ( thanks MCRU) along with a replacement armboard from Soundsupports. All I've got to do now is take out the old arm of the TT and put in the new stuff in :eek:

So, any tips and advice from you lot would be very welcome. I managed the Mike New bearing without any problems but I imagine that this job is a bit more involved. I'll do it on Monday morning so at least I'll be sober :lol:

Before you start, remove the (MN) bearing first.
You have to turn the deck upside down afterwards, so if you don't want oil all over the place, remove the bearing.

Once upside down, it's fairly easy.
Remove the bottom.
Remove the rubberish black shell.
Remove the three screws that hold the arm...

Ok, thanks guys - just done the job. Very proud of myself I must say. I have a problem though - I've only got sound coming out of one channel :steam:

Hi Simon, do you mean from your Jelco?
Have you checked that the tonearm cable is inserted correctly and all the way?

Yeah, from the Jelco I mean. I've pushed the DIN connector in as far as it goes. I only get sound from the left channel and when I change the RCAs around I only get sound from the right. So it's either a faulty tonearm cable or somethings up in the tonearm. I don't have a spare tonearm cable to check it out :doh: I'm feeling really fed up now. I was looking forward to a long session tonight.

Have you checked the head shell? Have you checked that each tag from the cartridge is correctly inserted both sides? Sometimes they are too wide and get loose... A quick careful tightening with some pliers does the job...

Hmm, tried 2 different Sumiko headshells but no luck there. Might try the supplied Jelco one today. Couldn't face doing anything more yesterday :steam:

I understand you! Sometimes it's actually good to leave things untouched while the temper gets hot!
If the original headshell isn't giving you any joy, then have a look at the RCA from the tonearm cable, see if anything is loose there, if that doesn't bring any solution, then you have a faulty internal cabling in the Jelco...:doh:

I've got to say that the great Yannis supplied the cable. I contacted him yesterday and he's going to supply me with a new cable just to make sure that the cable isn't at fault. What a guy! ;)

More than top - I received a new cable today and BAZINGA it's working like a dream :D I was dreading that the problem was somewhere else so you can imagine my relief when things sprung into life.
