Have both the above on the to do shelf , Gaarard401 no arm, Alphason no P/S.
Anybody heard a comparison of the two?
Its either put the Alphason 100s arm on the 401 or sort a P/s for Alphason.

thoughts ?

I used to have an Alphason Sonata with an HR100S MCS tonearm and it was one of the finest turntables I have ever heard.

That's an interesting decision. A Sonata/HR100S is a superb combo but the HR100S also sounds sublime on a 401.

I think you're going to have to try them both out and see which you prefer.

As soon as I saw the title I thought of your 301/HR100S which was/is a very sweet combination. One of the only times I've heard an OC9 really sound 'right'. :)

Most kind of you to say so!

I need to get it up and running again as everthing was stripped out of the old plinth ready to go into a new one. I just haven't got round to drilling it for the arm yet.

And yes, it will be at Scalford again this year... :eyebrows:

I have an early Sonata without the later power supply, but with a HS100MCS and an OC9. Compared with a Thorens TD124 with Rega RB300 arm and Technics EPC205 it was massively ahead, although I never tried them both with the same arm. My son now has the TD124, but I still have a 301 awaiting the day I have more time!

The Sonata, as long as it's in good working condition, should annihilate any Garrard on noise. Sorry, but idler drive adds summat alright to the music, it's called drive-noise, although if it's dealt with properly, it's more than easy to ignore it. Good suspended belt drives, despite other possible issues, usually give a superbly quiet noise floor behind the music as the best direct drives do - in my opinion.

Well the Thorens is now sounding a lot better after a service, and a new Sumiko blue point No. 2. :D
