'The Yes Album' was the third studio album by Yes, the first to feature Steve Howe (previously a member of Bodast) on guitars. It reached number 4 in the UK album chart and has sold enought to qualify it for platinum status.
Listen out for the first appearance of the Yes trademark three part harmonies and Steve Howe's solo on 'Yours Is No Disgrace', which was supposed to be a statement on the (then current) Vietnam war. Throughout the album, there are plenty of changes of pace, mood and style, along with a Chet Atkins clone in 'The Clap'

This is probably my favourite YES album and I consider it a bit of a classic It has a consistency of excellence throughout and for me finds the right balance between good song writing and experimentation

Aye tis definetly a classic....the first yes album I bought on cd...still have it the untouched original issue which sounds poor..have it also on vinyl and it sounds superb.

Super sounding recording on the original plum Atlantic LP pressing. Later versions less good. This deserves high marks. 9/10 from me.

Great album this, just nudges Close to the Edge for being my favorite. I love the triology that makes up Starship Trooper particularly Wurm.
10/10.

He was in a band called Tomorrow before Bodast..I have it on CDee somewhere...The most amusing aspect for me is the USA/Canada & i think the Australian version of the 'Time & A Word' record cover, has steve on the front

Just a couple of weeks ago, I spent an afternoon listening to this album through all sorts of combinations of my gear. A work colleague was interested in hearing my system, so he brought a few recordings including a Mobile Fidelity CD of this and we spent some time comparing it to the original vinyl pressing that I have.
We played it through my Accuphase, Gyro and G99 in turn, through the Radford STA15. After that we did the whole cycle again through the Levinson amps!
Interesting comparisons from a system point of view, but not really relevant in this thread.
It's a great album & one of their best, I should say.
8/10 from me.

.......oh, & we both agreed the vinyl was better than the Mob Fidelity CD in every case!

Well I have this spinning right now and its been somewhile since I played it and I was thinking before hand, 'well that's going to be a 9 from me' and then the first few bars of Starship Trooper kicked in and I'm back in the 70's.

How can it not be a perfect score . . . the memories come flooding back and Yes at Reading in 75' was very likely the best rock show I have ever witnessed, even though it was pissing down with rain all through their set. That was the first time I had seen a laser too, big, bold, bright and green searing through the rain right across the crowd.... I was awestruck.

A stone cold classic, I love it :D

10/10

I'm not the biggest fan of Yes but this album seems to be doing it for me right now. A nice and friendly 7 from me. Fab bass sound, its my instrument and if I could record that tone I'd be happy. This will get another spin from me.

''The Clap'' has always been the talking point of the album for it's acoustic recording! but for me the best bit it's ''starship Trooper'' no i lied it's the complete album :eyebrows:

For Starship Trooper alone (I shall never forget their live performance of it), it gets a 9.6 rounded up to 10 ;) I do still rate Fragile and Relayer higher, but then they're simply orgasmic albums.
