I'm genuinely intrigued where they think they are going to get all the water they will need and all the food, they can't carry the food and they can't grow it without water.

There is water on Mars so in theory that is not a major problem. The biggest issue as I understand it is the deadly radiation that hits you once you leave the Earth's magnetic field - you need a lead-lined spacecraft, so you would need to build it in orbit and getting all that lead up there won't be cheap.
