A guy from Scottish power changed my meter tonight. I asked if they would make a jot of difference sound wise to the hi fi.....so the nice chap fitted a new lcd job instead of the old rotating disk type, also replaced all the cables going into the meter.
If I aint mistaken there is a marginal improvement to the sound.....is it just me imagining it?

Hi Tony,

It's possible that the impedance of your supply has been lowered slightly, with the addition of the new cables, so if you've got a free sonic upgrade, then nice one.... :)

However, you missed a trick... Do you know if your main fuse is rated at 100A? If not, you could've requested an upgrade, by stating that you were going to install a new power shower, or some other large electrical applicance that would massively increase the load on your supply. Now *that* (a new and up-rated service fuse) would've given you a very noticeable sonic improvement! :eyebrows:

However, it's still not too late. You can phone up Scottish Power and ask them to come and check the fuse and upgrade it, if necessary. It won't cost you a penny, either!

Marco.

Marco,
How do I know, is that in the breaker box?....thanks for the tip.
with the aid of some limoncelo and proseco I am definitely hearing some improvements!!!!

Lol - that may partly account for what you're hearing! :eyebrows:

The service fuse will be housed separately, with a tag around it, next to your consumer unit. You cannot touch it, as it's not your property, and thus is illegal to tamper with it in any way.

However, you could get Scottish Power to have a look. The idea is that if your service fuse is only rated at, say, 80A, and if you're running a power shower, along with a number of other high-current drawing electrical appliances, and they were all being used at the same time (theoretically possible), the combined current draw could exceed the 80A allowance of the fuse, causing an overload, and thus potentially a fire, if left that way for long enough.

Basically, even if the combined current draw of your present electrical appliances (should you not have a large power shower) doesn't exceed 80A, or whatever your current fuse is rated at, having a 100A fuse fitted would do no harm whatsoever and simply give you more 'headroom' to play with, should you fit more high-current drawing appliances into your home in future.

Therefore, by upgrading your service fuse, not only would you be making your house safer, but also improving the sound of your hi-fi system, due to lowering the supply impedance.

It's a win-win! :)

Dave.Dave,
School night, everyone out- an announced change to the mains.....really need to give this a listen purely for scientific reasons! (rake through cupboards to see what booze has been hidden from me)
Im only human......

I had the leccy people out to change the incoming fuse to a 100A. I also asked if they would allow me to polish the end caps with brasso and coat it with Deoxit D5. I did get a strange look but the electrician humoured me. Made an audible difference to my ears. I also followed Roy K Riches advice on separate CU and 6 runs of 10 mm2 to furtech rhodium unswitched sockets. The system really rocked. Also strangely the Naim traffo's reduced their usual evening hum to almost silence..
