Thought this be an oportunity to continue from the Mana thread to proper equipment furniture:

Of course you could always save money and use this stuff instead, same sort of performance as Torlyte, for a DIY orientated workout and budget.

Yeh what ever.

LOL. That's funny, Steve. I was going to suggest the same! :lolsign:

More seriously though, I think the Torlyte racks probably work well but they're grossly overpriced for what they are.

Andre, mate, even you have to admit that Russ has lost the plot in the pricing of some of his stuff these days!

I used to have the 3 legged torlyte TT table many years ago and didn't find anything better to use under the Voyd I used back then.

Yep that was the first bit of Torlyte i ever had.Good old days..

At least the Torlyte stuff has a credible design principle behind it, unlike many so-called 'hi-fi supports' today.

Apart from the price, though, the only problem I have is that the blonde wood-look Ikea thing has been done to death... {Yawn}

We need more originality!

I recon veneering in exotic wood veneer would have no influence on sound, it's what's inside thats the key.

Definitely, dude. But you don't just have to use wood.

There are other materials around you know ;)

Aye tru but when you start laminating things such as thin aluminium sheet or Formica that could interfear with sound.Only other thing i'd opt for is a black finish.I seem to remember Russ with a Garrard '301' in Torylite plinth finished in black @ a show in Buxton victoria Hotel years ago..

Laminating is a good way to address resonances across the shelves. The principle is used in Hutter racks.

What exactly is "Torlyte" anyway? Is it a manufacturerd product from some massive forest products company or does RA make the stuff?

Marco

I thought you knew, it's made from turtles!

Torlyte is an incredibly light wooden honeycomb structure which is all handmade & supposidly very time consuming to construct, no RATA don't make it.

Like I said, it's made from real turtles, hence 'Torlyte'. I believe that Russ was originally going to call it 'Turtleyte' but encountered some problems with animal rights.

Well the old tripod Torlyte stand, was the best stand you could get for the Voyd turntables be it a Valdi or a bigger one imho.

When I owned a Valdi it was by far the best one I could find for it and errrr :sofa: that included Mana.

My secondary system rack (now used for the video gear) is Torlyte. It cost me a bomb when I first bought it from RA but it has always performed very well. As a rack design it is seriously flawed, though, as the rear centre leg always fouls on a connector so I have to shuffle equipment sideways to get it to fit.

Hi Martin
Do you still have the STD '305'?

MartinT
25-04-2011, 14:12
I do, and it's looking for a good home (it's a 305M with SME cutout). There are some scuff marks and the bonded suede mat on the platter is past it's best, but it's in the same condition as I bought it, and plays very well.

Maybe be an idea to put it in the Private ads, anyone looking in for a good TT, i can confirm it's a great deck (Are you sure it's the 'M' version) ?

Never had any direct experience of one, but always suspected it was a better deck than the, then, ubiquitous Linn.
