View Full Version : Horse Boxes
Is there a minimum speed that these should maintain on the public highway? I seem to get stuck behind them and they make up the speed as they go along, or not as the case is normally. Some are well under 30 in a 30 limit and not much more at any other time (i.e in 40, 60 limits)
I accept that their cargo are sensitive, but is it because there are horses on board, or that some of the boxes seem so old as to be only fit for the knackers yard, or something else?
They are usually only taken out half a dozen times a year and one of them is for the compulsory ministry plate where most of them are condemned ( i have that on first hand information from a inspector) saw one broken down this morning which only had 3 of its indicators working as hazard lights to supposedly show that they had broken down and not about to turn right as i first though due to the near side rear not working :steam:
I have quite often had to back up a horse box trailer down our yard when they have got them selves in a right pickle, 90% are driven by women, not much more to add

i do not think banning them etc is the way to go , and yes i do get frustrated being stuck behind one , thing to remember is , if its going fast , its empty , if its going slow , it has a life on bord , try to imagine being in the back of a transit with nothing to hold on to , and the driver is doing 80 down a country lane , and then imagine how you would fair , no i do not and never have owned a horse

Most of the horse boxes are driven by young ladies who drive them at weekends and very infrequently at that. One could argue that a horse in the rear should have a jolt-free journey and that drivers of the aforesaid vehicles will drive accordingly but these ladies simply are not used to the dimensions or performance of their vehicles.
Tractors using public roads should be only allowed on them between the hours of 2.00am and 4.00am, or pay immediate cash compo to all the poor sods stuck behind them down narrow winding roads :steam:

That's a straight petrol one mines a 1955 diesel they also came as TVO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tractor_vaporising_oil)(tractor vaporizing oil) which is mixed from Petrol and paraffin devised during the war for the petrol rationing .
first drove one when i was 8 or 9 on the hay carting when we had our farm in Wales, i had 5 vintage tractors up until a few years ago, used to go ploughing at the Steam shows,

Good post. I would not suggest banning them, but I would have thought that any vehicle should be expected to make progress so as not to inconvenience other road users with an eye to the recommended speed limit for the road.

Lol... Can you 'race-tune' those T20s to go quite fast? I spy a nice big engine in there and not a lot of weight, so it's likely some fun could be had belting down country lanes at 'silly' speeds on one of those bad boys!! :D

I have been myself at the front of a queue of traffic causing a small tailback whilst happily bouncing down the road at the wheel of a Tractor, JCB and large forklifts but and it is a big but i have always pulled over every so often to let the traffic past to get it moving again, i have had a few close shaves with impatient twats taking risky overtaking maneuvers on bends etc,
If it has road tax and insured its allowed on the road end of,
Horses still have preference on the road over anything else, Fact, when the owners stick them in the back of a box they seem to forget about anyone else as well

Isn't it such a shame that so many of us are in such a hurry to always get somewhere and that we get sooooo pissed off if anyone dares to hold us up.

A few years ago at a Horticultural type trade show i showed an interest in a new tractor on display that resembled a Massey Ferguson so i proceeded to tell the sales man how i knew all about the original Grey Fergie and how good it was and how his New tractor looked a lot like it, he listened very patiently and let me finish also questioning him on his knowledge of the Grey Fergie, his reply was that did i know of a certain set of Pictures of Harry Ferguson, Nicholas Soames and Winston Churchill sitting watching a Fergie being demonstrated at Chartwell to which i replied yes, he then told me he was the man driving the Fergie and was in Fact Harry's chief demo man, I felt about 2 inches tall :doh:
