Well done , I have been told loosing it is easy ( Not sure if its true ) keeping it off is the hard part as its easy to slip back into your old eating habits :)

It's all relative. The less body fat you have the harder it is to lose weight. As you get older your metabolism slows down.
It's largely simple physics of calories in/out but there are a few tricks that help.
Six small meals a day.
Decent breakfast.
Don't eat after about 7pm
Drink lots of water.
5' 8" (a short-ass) and currently 13 stone (an increase in half a stone over September last)..
Had a lecture from the Diabetic nurse last week, so for my health's sake and to get my blood pressure back down, as well as to stop snoring, which has become an issue again  I have to lose half to one stone at least.
No more cheese scones or sticky pear cake at break time :( The school has a really good cook.............
Good luck mate,
on the same journey here.
Doing "alternate day fasting" which seems to be working. :)
Down just over a stone in 7 weeks, doesnt feel like im missing out on anything.
I was 14 stone, looking to lose another to get down to fighting weight of 12.
Thats the target!

A diet without proper exercise is useless for losing weight.
You're wrong. A diet without exercise is better than no diet at all. A diet combined with exercise is better. Healthy eating and healthy exercise is best.
I covered this by saying calories in/calories out. Simple physics.
I have been known to eat 6000-7000 calories a day for a week and lose a lot of weight.
It's all quite complicated but this forum is probably not the place to expand any further.

Day 1 disaster
New years day
Went to a club that I am a member of and they had a spread laid on , need less to say to be polite I indulged
New years late afternoon
Went to visit a friend and his family of 22 years standing
As I came through the front door I was asked a question
" Had any dinner yet Al ? "
My reply , " No I am having some salad when I get home -already in the fridge done "
Next thing I know a plate of boiled bacon spuds carrots peas pudding was thrust into my hands and the following comment made
" Get that down you " well not wanting to be rude how could I refuse
So restricted intake starts from today :)

Oh Lord. I knew it would be bad but not this bad. Weighed in this morning for start of diet and I'm a whopping 12st 10lbs. That's very close to the heaviest I've ever been. Need to lose 2st to be at racing weight . . . by April. This is going to be horrible.
Right then chaps, I started the Alternate Day diet five days ago. That's one day of normal (but not excessive) eating and one fasting day of 600 calories. The fasting days are hard, no doubt about it, but I decided enough was enough and I'm a diabetic so I can't afford to let my body go runaway - the consequencies are far worse than for a non-diabetic. This diet is supposed to help shock the pancreas back into better performance and mine could do with returning some function.
I'm 1.78m tall and weigh 88kg (I don't do imperial measurements). My target loss is 4kg per month so I'd like to be down to 80kg in two months' time, which would take me from over-weight on the BMI scale just back into the normal zone.
I shall report intermittently on progress but I'm hopeful of some good results.
Group encouragement most welcome!

Good luck with it Martin but it doesn't strike me as being healthy or sustainable. As a diabetic you are dead right to be vigilant with your weight.
I'll race you to 80kg. I'm 81kg at the moment.
Seriously, my target is 70kg by end of April (my first race) so let's see who gets on best with targets.
Try drinking plenty of water on fasting days and I find chewing gum helps.

I was classed as borderline diabetic when I had a medical some years ago
I was told the older you get the less efficient your pancreas becomes at processing sugar I ate a snickers bar every day and had 2 big sugars in every tea and coffee x 10 a day , the doctor told me to go home and shovel 20 big sugars into a cup and see how much I ended up with , It was a shock
So for the last 2 years only a snickers bar once a month as a treat and down to 1 small sugar has for me returned my BSL to normal
Good luck with you quest Martin :)
Hi Al
On the subject of sugar in tea/coffee, I gave it up a long, long time ago. Now, try not to groan at this: the best way to go forward is to give it up altogether, not reduce the quantity. Try very hard to drink your tea/coffee without any sugar. It will be hateful for about a week, but stick with it and keep drinking despite your reluctance.
What you will discover is that your taste buds will recover from the cloying overwhelming sweetness of sugar and start to taste everything more naturally. You will realise how varied and wonderful different teas and coffees taste. You will actually be able to TASTE your drink for the first time. You will never go back!
Thanks for the good wishes. Good luck yourself!

When I was 13 I used to have 4 heaped sugars in tea. My best mate told me that if I left them out for a week I would never want them again.
I did and I didn't.

I guess I might be accurately described as 'a big ol' unit'.
I've tended towards the lardier side of life, er, all my life. I've had spates of shedding the pounds and even got down to a very svelte 12st 7lbs in my mid-twenties (I'll be rumbling past sixty this year), but as of yesterday I tipped the scales at 18st 10lbs.....:nocomment:
So - I've gone on 'the regime' again. It's not quite as bad as it sounds mind you. For about the last 15 years I've pushed weights on a fairly regular basis, and as a result I carry a fair bit of meat and bone these days, and my preferred 'comfortable' weight is now around the 16st mark. I'm 6ft 1in BTW.
The intention is to initially get to about 17st by Easter, and then re-assess (17st is a fairly happy compromise, and depending how I feel, I may stick at that or just under. I actually made 15st 13lb about three years ago but God that was hard).
The 'regime' generally consists of a good porridge-based breakfast, followed by about five or six small nutritionally-sound meals, roughly equi-spaced throughout the day (it helps keep the insulin levels substantially level, thereby avoiding 'crashes'). I shall also be doing about 10-15 minutes fast rowing in the morning (been lax on this lately, and it sure hasn't helped!) and lifting the heavies about three times a week (ditto laxity). As usual I will also be walking the dog every day for a couple or three miles on the beach and road, and cycling occasionally (no car, so not much option  ). I also deliberately don't weigh-in weekly as I just don't find it helpful - so I may not be reporting progress until about this time next month.
Wish me luck - and good luck to all those having a go too :youtheman:
the best way to go forward is to give it up altogether, not reduce the quantity.
Agreed, you have to just stop and be strict. When I joined the Navy in 1976 I used to take 2 sugars in my tea and coffee. The line in the mess room at HMS Raleigh for the 'with sugar' tea urn was always long and I hate waiting. The line for the 'without sugar' urn . . . well there wasn't one, so I started drinking it without.... tasted shite, but I stuck with it and after a month the 'with sugar' tea tasted shite. I have not had sugar in my tea since November 1976.
I drink my coffee black without and hate it any other way (unless there's a whiskey in there). Been doing that since 1983 and I didn't like how that tasted to start with either ;)
Just say no, easy to say I know, but that really is the only way to kick a habit, its a state of mind - losing weight is a lifestyle change, its not a diet IMO.
Best of luck too :)
I try to keep to 70Kg (a nice round 11 stone), which with height places my body mass index towards the upper end of the 'healthy range'.
I weighed myself last Thursday, and found after the Festive eating and drinking my weight had increased to 73.6Kg!
Crash diet and today I'm on the way back to normal at 71.2Kg. :)

Oh Lord. 70kg. I dream of that
Humph!!!!!
Blood pressure still too high after med increase, (thick neck) snoring now an issue again, rabbit food now a staple and now have an ECG and 24 hour blood-pressure-machine check coming soon! Don't know why I feel so anxious all the time but this must be part of it :(
Haven't dared weigh myself since the Nurse visit on Christmas eve. It's going to be a hard slog from now on, although I do try to trot up and down the three flights of stairs at work and am trying to make time for a lunchtime walk round the block. I haven't felt so unfit and generally cr@p in ages........
After cancer surgery and chemotherapy a few years ago, I did once hit a low of 65kg. As my partner says now, I looked emaciated and at death's door. So there can be too low a weight ;)

It all depends on your height. At 1.7m tall, my prefered weight of 70Kg gives me a BMI of 24.2, which is towards the upper end of the 'healthy' band.
At 1.78m tall, 65kg is fine according to the BMI graphs for a man. I didn't look good, though, and had no strength in me whatsoever.
Although I am targeting 80kg, I need to get it down to 77kg for the normal band. Small steps, though.

I have toast for breakfast with Benecol spread along with two mugs of coffee with one sugar in each. I also have just one main meal during the day which is at around 18:00 and I keep myself constantly feeling hungry as it is the only way I can keep the weight down. I have lost weight since November of last year but I haven't checked how much until I go to my 'Well Man' clinic at the GP's surgery in a few months. I was 85kg's at that time and I am around 5' 10". My BMI came out at 27.

If you have Egg with brekki this will stop you feeling hungry.. You don't seem to be eating much, do you feel a bit tired or anything?
Right then chaps, I started the Alternate Day diet five days ago. That's one day of normal (but not excessive) eating and one fasting day of 600 calories.
I'm doing a similar regime Martin - a cross between the Alternate Days and the 5:2 - I call it the 4:3 - Monday, Wednesday and Friday are the "down" days when I stick to the 600 calorie limit - on my "up" days I am aiming for 1,480 calories (which was what the My Fitness Pal app came up with months ago when I first thought about doing just a normal diet.) Saturday and Sunday have been a challenge wanting to have a drink but it is surprising how good you can be on the food if you know you can't have any wine otherwise! ;) Limited opportunity for exercise at the moment but trying to do some walking when I get the chance and will get onto the exercise bike I keep promising...
The most important thing for anyone contemplating weight loss in my opinion is to accurately record everything you consume - just the mere thought that you have to write it down or input it into an app is (for me at least!) enough of a reminder to really think if I actually want to ruin my hard work with the slice of cheese I was about to cut from the fridge, or chocolate I was going to nick from the tin... :)
My plan is probably a bit too aggressive but it seems to be working so far - ideally I need to lose 4.5 stone  - 12lbs gone so far since the New Year, and I didn't really start in earnest for the first few days. Aiming to reach my goal in August, so a good start. :)
That's an aggressive target, Alex
I agree about knowing the calories you're eating and I tend to add them up in my head throughout the day. A good calorie lookup app for the phone is a must, as is a weight tracker. Also, Ruth bought me a little electronic step counter (Omron Walking Style III (http://www.omron-healthcare.com/eu/en/our-products/activity-monitoring/walking-style-iii)) that I keep in my pocket at all times and I can graph my daily activity (I walk around quite a lot during a day at work). It all helps and, as you say, makes you think twice about having that slice of bread or piece of cheese.
A funny thing that I've noticed is that my waistline has started to improve more than the weight loss itself. I really notice the loosening of my trousers but the scales aren't showing a huge improvement - yet.

Well I've only lost 2kg in 18 days so far, but I far prefer slowly-but-surely over getting it wrong and putting the weight back on later. The Alternate Day diet is going to be a lifestyle thing for me so I have to completely settle into it.

The Alternate Day diet is going to be a lifestyle thing for me so I have to completely settle into it.
The 'lifestyle thing'I have to agree with. Regrettably over the last 20 years I have become somewhat stout veering towards a'portly' 14 stone. General BMI charts don't work for me 'cos I'm fairly solidly built but I know the weight i feel happy with...12.5/13 stone.
Now Mrs Bearing, may camels never infest her personal space, is not a domestic goddess so I tend to do most of the cooking and of course tasting and so on, plus nibbles in between leading to an excess of waistband.
I love my food so dieting per se is a no no.
So I simply keep a log of what I eat on,
http://www.foodfocus.co.uk/registerprompt.php,
which can be anything by the way but only allow myself a total number of calories per day. Plus upping the excersise, walking climbing and cycling, does it for me.
Beer? I may well be accused of heresy, lashed to an old beer pump and beaten with wet celery but actually I don't like the stuff so no probs with cals there. The only weakness is for a fine single malt occasionally. I can still remember the bottle of Port Ellen we had when we got married 10 year back....mmmmmmmmmmm!:D

Whilst in no way wishing to discourage those of you who feel that they are overweight, I ought to point out that the achievement of a 'body mass index' which lies in the the so-called healthy range, is not the only indicator of an acceptable and healthy weight-to-size ratio.
An alternative is to measure the distance around your waist. If it is no more than half your height, then you are fine. The body mass index, being one's weight (in Kg) divided by the square of one's height (in metres), disadvantages those who have a 'stocky' physigonomy, or are 'big boned'.

Thanks chaps. Once I got going I didn't find it too hard. I now really enjoy food more as well. I tend to favour strong flavours now and less actual food.
My total lost is 19 lbs so far, which is better overall than my plan, so all going well and finding it reasonably painless, although not having a drink on a Friday night is a bit tough! Still got a long way to go but getting there - it's a marathon not a sprint! ;)

OK
Just off the scales after my motion :)
Started at 17 stone ( 107.9 Kgs )
now reading 16.5 stone ( 104.7 Kgs )
so I have lost 1/2 stone ( 3.17 Kgs )
I am happy with that weight loss :)
Total change of diet
NO sugar
NO butter
NO margarine
NO Fry ups
NO bacon sandwiches
NO sausage sandwiches
Changed from white to Wholemeal bread and less of it
Changed my work lunch from commercially made sandwiches or chicken curry and rice to
Low fat crispbread / crackers and at Andrea's suggestion pastrami ( very nice if you have not tried it :) )
Zero fat Strawberry yoghourt's
1 Banana a day
I now actually feel hungry as I have cut down on food intake something I cant remember in the past , always ate what I wanted when I wanted
I feel confident I can continue the loss as I am enjoying the challenge as well
not able to beat Alex with his 19 lb loss but as said I am happy
Keep it up everyone :D

One of the biggest problems we have is dairy. So yoghurts and that is a no no for us. A really good diet but boring is gluten and wheat free. You can lose some serious weight on that diet. A little pricey too.

You can have a low fat Greek style Yoghurt - 75Kal/2.6g fat per 100g
We never ever cut out Semi-Skimmed milk with cereal etc but yet we loose weight. When you ate your cereal, people have a bad habbit of drinking the milk that's left, just leave it.
I went down to red milk. Although the calorie reduction is not that great, every little helps. It's only for cereal, I never have milk in tea or coffee.

One deciding factor was finding out fat around internal organs is a bad thing, possibly a very bad thing.

Agree to a point - depend on how much salt you put on your food. There is an unecessary amount of salt in processed food (it's a cheap preservative). It amazes me there is typically 0.5g in each slice of bread.
Apropos pastrami, I rarely eat it, preferring corned-beef, the latter having about 0.4g salt per slice.

Just remembered one of the things that pushed me to lose weight was my waist which I think used to be 42", possibly bigger. Weight was a bit over at 14 st + but the 42" waist meant I was classed as "obese". That came as a surprise and a spur

I love Greek food but it can be fattening if you not careful, however i want to go & really enjoy it without worrying about calories, if i put half a stone one when i come back it's no big problem.

Well it's actually Crete..A nice quiet place called Kalo Chorio, it's near Agios Nikolaos. We stayed in this hotel before i loved it. 2 weeks of peace & quiet away from mainstream hustle and bustle holiday resorts that i really cannot be doing with.
Nice. I'm looking forward to 13 days of peace away from it all in July.
I used to go to Crete a lot Andr'e, small place called Plakias with a great beach - I'm now thinking about returning this year after reading this thread.

*IN RESPONSE TO A POST BT RARE BIRD. NOW DELETED.
After doing a little research, I found that an efficient bike generator pedaled by a reasonably fit person can produce about 100 watts of continuous output. An experienced biker can produce a peak of more than 400 watts, but peaks don’t count for much when it comes to pedal power generators. Assuming an ambitious exercise period of one hour, a person could produce about 100 watt-hours of electricity. That is one-tenth of a kilowatt-hour (1 kilowatt-hour = 1,000 watts for 1 hour).
I suggest that whoever wrote this ill informed garbage does a bit more research.
"An experienced biker can produce peaks of 400 watts".
Really. I'm ancient and not particularly good on a bike but I can hit peaks of almost 1,000 watts. Pedalling along at 100 watts is what a child could do.
My indoor training bike has virtual reality so I can do rides in the Alps and see how many watts I'm pushing out on those big climbs.
Problem with the whole cycling to produce electricity thing is that most people these days are so unfit they could barely generate enough power for a torch bulb.
Had 9 days off the regime as been on leave and lots of days out, however I have still tried to choose wisely if I can - will be interesting to see what has happened at weigh in tomorrow - I'm hoping that damage limitation will have led to no more than putting 2lbs back on, but that might be optimistic!
Still, I'm 11lbs ahead of my plan, so one bad week won't be a real setback and it has been very enjoyable not worrying too much about what I've eaten or drunk! :)

Hope you havent put too much on Buddy.. Over the last week ive been hitting a problem where ive got like 2-300 calories left, ive had to like use em with things like a couple slices of Malt loaf etc.. If you don't use your allowed calories i find you don't loose weight...
Here's one of my favourite low fat, but tasty recipes for you chaps . . . . much nicer than salad and low cal dressings!
Seared salmon with balsamic vegetables
(serves 4)
Ingredients
4 x 160g skinless and boneless salmon fillets
200g baby plum tomatoes cut in half
200g fine French beans
3 cloves sliced garlic
Half a sliced red onion
80ml extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Juice of half a lemon
2 large sweet potatoes
Method
1. Preheat oven to 180c
2. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into even-sized chunks and place in a saucepan. Cover with water and add a pinch of salt and bring to a simmer then cook for roughly 12 minutes until tender. Drain and set aside.
3. Whilst the potatoes are cooking, blanch the green beans, bring a pan of salted water the boil and blanch for 5 minutes until only just tender then drain and set aside.
4. Next heat a large non stick frying pan, add a tbsp of vegetable oil and season the salmon fillets and sear for 1 minute on both sides. Transfer to a baking sheet and pop in the oven to just cook through for 5 minutes.
5. Mash the sweet potatoes and add a splash of the extra virgin oil. Season and keep warm on a low heat.
6. Next add the remaining extra virgin oil to the used salmon pan. Allow it to warm. Add the sliced garlic and onion then add the plum tomato halves and beans. Drizzle in the balsamic and add a touch of seasoning. Finally, finish with fresh lemon juice, warm all together.
7. Take warm serving plates and add a spoonful of mashed sweet potatoes to each plate before scattering your mixed vegetables around. Top each plate off with a piece of seared salmon drizzle over the pan juices and serve.
I have varied the above published recipe and I think its much better (and lower fat).
I use baby new potatoes instead of sweet potato and cook them in the micro for 5 mins first. I don't blanch the green beans to keep them crisp and use a whole onion for 1 person. I use hardly any oil and sear the vegetables, garlic and potatoes etc. in hot oil (less than a minute), before putting in the oven. I then sear the salmon which I season with cracked black pepper and sea salt and then place that in the oven with the veg mix. Just before serving I drizzle and toss the mix in a good quality balsamic, using much lees than 2 tbsp and finish with a squeeze of lemon and some freshly milled black pepper . . . . delicious.

You're doing well - http://www.worldwideflood.com/ark/technology/animal_power.htm.
It seems a healthy human being can develop 1.2hp (900W) for brief periods (~ 30 seconds) and 0.1hp (75W) for indefinite periods.

Barry, I'm old and fairly average in racing terms. A site about horses won't tell the picture. I'd suggest you look into what proper cyclists push out (watts). I ride with lads who can hold over 300w for long periods and I have a mate (a former British Lion) who's hit a peak of about 1,600w and he's 57. If Mark Cavendish could only manage that in his sprints he'd be an also ran.
Still seems high: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17786683.

I'm feeling a bit porky lately. Definitely got some flab over my belt. I need to get back down to around 11 stone, I think I'm back over 12 stone currently.
I'm not a big guy and anything over 12 stone and I definitely look overweight (I was 14 stone about twenty years ago and looked very plump).
Back on the cereals and fruit I think. I'm addicted to cheese and crusty bread which doesn't help. Not had a beer for a month, seems to make no difference though.
Well my "naughty" week only resulted in a a 1lb gain, and the following week I lost 3 lbs, so a net loss of 2lbs. That means I've now hit the 2 stone lost mark, but it is definitely getting harder to shift now! Still, with a bit of luck this nice weather will carry on and I can get out and start doing a bit more exercise as well.

Following on from Beanz on Toast thread.. There's some nice tinned Baked Bean & some horrid ones. I hate sweet tasting Baked Beans, i dislike sugar anyway. Hower Asda do some ok Beans but again a bit sweet for me, now ive discovered a 30% less Sugar & 25% Less Salt version (Light Blue Label), they are a whole lot better imho & the best bit is they save you quite a difference in Calories per tin difference..
Red label: 90 Cal per 100g/Sugar 4.1g per 100g/Salt 0.7g per 100g
Blue Label: 84 Cal per 100g/Sugar 2.2g per 100g/Salt 0.5g per 100g
Does'nt seem a lot but when your eating a full big tin which is 410g it is a difference. However i only do half a big tin which is less that a bought half size tin which is 220g..
