Visit to Tannoyman

Awhile back on a computer thread David and myself were talking about the merits of Computer audio and so instead of getting involved in a circular argument I suggested after Christmas we meet up and I bring my laptop along to compare.
David has a excellent system, one that does scale, detail, soundstage and bass really well. It was the first time I ever heard Westminsters and understand his love for them, one of the best systems I have ever heard.
I think we ended up agreeing that all the approaches we tried sounded very good.

SME 20 with the right recording the SME certainly had the edge.
It was a really nice afternoon and like to thank David and his wife for their kindness

I did the transplant this morning. (I fitted refurbished mid range and tweeter to the left speaker). It has made a big difference. The Quad 33 gets it sevice tomorrow then the vintage system is complete apart fopm sorting the grills out.

Needless to say the vintage system will now be staying. The work and cost has been fully justified

I swear that KJ bought a large batch of Ferrograph speakers and these boxes were definitely labelled S2! I have no idea what the differences were, if any, but they sounded bloody good (a touch too much sparkle, but that's all) and I really should have bought a pair since these run-out ones were cheaper than BC1's back then. We had about 20 pairs which filled up our stockroom and spilled out into the kitchen/cloakroom area. Nobody knows anything about them though, but a pair must come up at some point to prove I'm not mistaken in the model number......

Hi Dave

There is no branding on my Ferrographs at all so I can only surmise. The original leaflets which came with them showed them as S1's but they definitely have a different set of drivers to the original S1's. The originals had the KEF B139 and Goodmans cone midrange and tweeters. Mine have the B139, as the earlier ones but the Goodmans units are replaced with a 2" fabric domed Audax midrange unit (which is a stunner) and a Peerless fabric domed tweeter

An excellent summary of our findings. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of computer audio but not enough to take that route
