There are divided views about whether it is worth the extra cost over a stock Squeezebox or Duet and a very good external DAC.
The answer must be that it is worth it if the analogue replay chain is of the highest quality, and you need 24/96.
Squeezeboxes will only process up to 16/48.
Do also note that the Linn Sneaky DS

has been hacked so it will run with the better Squeezebox software.
Some say it sounds better that the Logitech Taransporter.
I use a Stock SB3 and Beresford 7510 6:4
Note also there are firms that upgrade a stock Squeezebox, all for less than the Transporter, which I have not heard.

How good are these?
Hi,
I have used the Squeezebox Classic & Transporter on/off for a few months connecting to 2 different high-end DAC's. The Transporter via its line-out is good but not exeptional, adding a DAC such as the Benchmark DAC1 really improves all aspects of sound.

Thanks guys.
I'm looking for something that I can use that doesn't need a PC or the TV on to operate now that the CD5x is reduntant! Happy to run a NAS or such like with a decent front end into the 7510/7520.

Probably the ideal thing if you don't want to use a screen would be the Squeezebox Duet. The remote with this has a small screen built in so you can select your tracks. It's a sexy piece of kit! Not too pricey either.
Your Apple TV can be controlled by an iPhone or an iTouch to the same effect.
Aye I do that already with an iPhone. I keep my iTunes on an external 2.5" HD at the moment as I work away from home a lot. I guess I was thinking that I could have 2 separate systems and just shuffle the files from the HD to a NAS for another system to use. (Complicated I know).
I guess getting an iTouch as well as the iPhone could well be the easier option for what I have.
By the way Remote app was updated to 1.2 and iTunes up to 8.1 last night.
No major alterations I don't think.
Back to the Transporter's quality and rivals
