i have never really cared for what I've switched on or off first, my system always sound very good regardless. I wouldnt worry too much about such things. ;) Unless, of course, you want to:scratch:

If you have the amp on whilst switching the other equipment on or off, you risk allowing lots of switching sparks and power rushes making their way through to your speakers at FULL amp power..

Worse than that, some power amps can do very funny things should the earth on the signal input either go from floating to being grounded or being disconnected..

I had some Crimson 640d power amps that went into potential amp-destroying oscillation should the earth be disconnected whilst powered on. Turning off the matching pre-amp before the amps did this... And this wasn't considered a fault - the designer even said that this was just a peculiarity of the design. I moved on as it scared me too much - a short power cut whilst even in the house could have sent them into oscillation as the pre-amp had a delayed switch-on ..


So, whilst I wouldn't suggest that you've been lucky not to have anything go wrong - MOST amps probably don't behave this way - unless you know the exact workings of both the amp and the preamp, I would never take the risk of doing anything other than:

Power amp OFF - first. Power amp ON - last

For me, 'OFF' means when the power light has faded to nothing as if might still be able to power the speaker up to that point.

Personally for an integrated, I'd not worry too much but still probably good practice to turn sources off first (if you ever turn sources off?).

I tell myself it shouldn't really matter, but always turn the power amp on last and off first. The Exposures that I've owned usually emit their "thump" up to 20 seconds after switchoff and that's when I start switching off the rest.

Yeah, pretty much the same for me I guess; power amp on last and power amp off first. The sources go through a power filter so all get turned off together.

The Whest stays on all the time - I figure as the power switch is round the back it's meant to be left on.

The ModWright preamp and Transcendent power amp are valved so I always power those two off when done.

I don't have a set order for switching them on or off, the ModWright auto-mutes and turns the volume to minimum when you switch it on so it's not critical if the power amp is operational.

Me too, saves the nasty pop through the speakers when you power up the source. Although my stuff only gets switched off on the front to kill the leds it's always left with the rear power switch on.

in that order , for the same reason , if source is "running" no thump , or at least masked by music , therefore i can't worry about it :rolleyes:
