I'm going to be on vacation for the next ten days and I'm happy knowing that I'll be spending alot of time listening to my Denon DL-S1.
The cart is mounted to my Audiomods MKIV arm which is in turn mounted to my newly rebuilt Luxman PD-300. I've spent a great deal of time dialing in the cart over the last 2 months, I'm now satisfied that it's time to sit back and listen.
Don't get me wrong, the DL-S1 was not finicky when it came to setup, nor is the Audiomods arm. It's just that I'm egregiously fussy, and an extreme tweaker.
I've come to appreciate this cart like no other I have ever owned, the music information it pulls from each record played is just amazing, and that music is rendered in a most satisfying way. Mids are full and clean, they're rendered smoothly, yet with detail aplenty. The bass is deep, well defined and taut. The high frequencies are delivered with appropriate speed - brights are bright, shimmers definitely shimmer, but never is there an offensive tone - it's all there but the listener receives the music without distress.
Holographic, 3D, whatever the term appropriate the DL-S1 surely paints a well defined picture. There is depth, there is width, and there is height...the DL-S1 paints a picture with the music that the mind can 'see'. And within this image there is more separation of music instruments than I have been accustomed to with any cartridge before. When listening to music by the likes of Supertramp or Alan Parsons you are always aware that there are things going on within the music that are barely apparent, but the DL-S1 separates instruments to the point that if you so choose - you can single out those non-apparent instruments or sounds.
I think the biggest compliment any music lover can give any piece of audio gear is that it makes you want to sit and listen. Well the DL-S1 is perfoming that feat for me, I never want to stop a session once it's underway, I have to struggle to get up and walk away.
That this cartridge is most often purchased for less then $1000 is just awesome, if there was balance in the world specific to performance vs value this cart would sell head-to-head with those selling for $3000 and up. I'm glad it sells for what it does, because it's unlikely I would have ever gotten the chance to hear it, let alone own this beautiful music maker.
