As mentioned in a different thread Dave, most of my stuff I have bought since Gawd knows when has been bought blind.
I've never unpacked it, played it and thought oh this is crap, so not sure if your answer is the one! ;)

For most equipment purchases, you really must audition and preferably in your own system. Many suppliers will loan you items or provide 30 day trial type terms.

However, I do sympathise with certain products that are either not available in this country or not easily auditioned. In these cases, you must do your homework, find reviews, check forums and read between the lines. Does it really sound like the kind of component that will work, or is it the current 'flavour of the month'?

Finally, don't forget system synergy. Is it working at its best? Good equipment support, good cabling and power arrangements? Sometimes that's what it takes to get something new to integrate well.

Finally, to answer your question: yes, I once bought a Helius Aureus tonearm on a Michell Syncro. It was an utter piece of shit, the worst example of engineering I've ever had the misfortune to spend money on.

This is the problem with the rise of Ebay, I think - so many people buying things on reputation alone and with no chance of an audition.

If you are interested in hifi, you want to try everything to see what it sounds like.
