Hi guys,

I bought a Sony power amp and it has a twin core attached power cable (double insulated - no earth). I want to replace this with an IEC socket so I can use a better quality mains cable. Should I leave the IEC earth connection disconnected inside the amp or should I earth to the chassis?

I guess if there was no Earth in the original cable, its not really required.

I Never fit an earth to the unit if one wasnt fitted previously but I make sure its connected in the wall plug end of any replacement 3 core cables.

It may be double insulated but that doesn't mean it'd do any harm at all to fit an earth to the chassis, in fact it adds another redundancy level of safety. I'd either solder an earth to the chassis or use a convenient chassis casing screw and use a spade connector to make an earth then connect to the IEC. Up to you but no harm in additional safety.
