View Full Version : History of Speakers: 1870-2008
Here's a poster I have up on my wall, I think its pretty interesting and maybe you've owned a few of these yourself ;) . The poster is quite big so the text isn't very clear so if you want to know what one of them is, tell me where about's it is and I'll have a look :) http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b622/AlexanderRobin/IMAG0097_zps6dc71c56.jpg
Nice one! I've spotted mine. :)
(I bet they've got the date wrong though - everyone does and even the manufacturer has now accepted and uses the mis-dating.)

There is always a (very small) chance it might be right , which are yours?
The Quad ESLs. Now ubiquitously referred to as Quad "57"s, they actually appeared in 1955.
As proof, they were advertised on the cover of the 1955 edition of the 'Hi-Fi Yearbook'.
Quad have given up pointing this out, and now even use this erroneous designation themselves.
Yep, it says 1957 :mental:. I think I heard these at a show last year at Heathrow, the protection would kick in every time a plane went over so it probably wasn't the demo for them.

The same guy produces a turn table version as a 'classic' photo just in case others might want it. think both are about £15-20 wach.
Currently own:
3rd row down far left - almost invisible! The B&W DM70C, 2
pairs the DM70 and the Uber rare Sony SS7000 built by B&W for Sony.
Tannoy ST200's near bottom right
Have owned
REL sub (Studio or Stentor) near bottom left
JBL control 1's (No idea why they are on that page, if i'm right of course!)
Yamaha NS10's - Hi FI version in image, Studio was horizontal no fronts.
Bose
Have heard:
Wilson Watt puppy center speaker - near bottom in middle
ATC near top left
Quad ESL57 near top right
Martin Logan ??? center of image
Blue "mini pods" center right
Tannoy wardrobe! below Martin Logans
Kef 104's (??? not sure correct number)
The red "Ferrari" speakers from soundtube ***
*** They made very very few of these, I saw a couple of them and heard one. Why ONE? well they are designed as a monolith speaker so NOT meant to be in pairs as the image shows.
WIERD that most of the others show in the image are in singles, and the one designed to be a single speaker shown as a pair - amuses me anyway.
Did I get most right?
Sure ive heard/owned some of the others JR149, Kef, maybe some more cant see the rest. I think its it a great set of images.
Meant to be a limited edition, often sold on fleabay.
Ok for the toilet, but to busy for the front room.

+1
some of the vintage magazine ads are nice as well,, i have just bought some of my system and speakers ,, they look nice in frames and a little more discreet being about 12" x 10" in old money:)
some of the old ads are real "artwork" and the manufacturers would have paid a fortune to have them produced
heres is a couple ,, and 70s and 80s has become very fashionable now.
