Now a precedent has been set it would be pretty churlish of us not to create a Belt Drive forum too, whadya think? Perhaps we can call it 'Below The Belt' ;)

Hmmmm could be a good idea, I wont be contributing cos i dont have a BD deck  I flogged my LP12 and Alphason solo decks this year. I'm sticking with Idler and DD. :D
Thirty five views and only one comment (cheers Andy)? I would have thought one of the 'Management' would have something to say on this
Got an LP12 & a Project (that's developed a buzz ) so I'd be interested, could call it 'belt up'

The spring arrangement on my belt driven Gyrodec suggests "Suspender Belt"
Count me in.
Maybe the 'Rubber band gang'.

:rfl: I knew this would happen..
It ain't happening! ;)
A separate section for Techies was easily justified, given the huge amount of interest. An idler one was a possibility, given the reasonable amount of interest.
Belt-drive is a no-no, chaps, as there just isn't enough interest on AoS for rubber-band decks to warrant it having a separate section, sorry...
Think about it this way: now all the D/D and idler boys have buggered off into their own little dens, you've now got the rest of Analogue Art to yourselves (all three of you)!! :D

There are 18 viewing Analogue Art at the moment. That's not fair, this is reserved for just the three of us........ Marco said !!! I was going to say that there's more than one way to skin a cat, wasn't sure if it was appropriate ?

There are a fair few Rega owners on AoS and probably as many who own Thorens decks. Garnish those with a few Linn's, Michell's, Nottingham Anologue's, Systemdeck's, Heybrook's etc, etc... ;)

Belt up.
Also me.
Got 5 belters, 3 idlers but only one DDer here!!! I suspect the most used TT drive system on ANY forum is belt.... But chopping up the sections so much will turn AoS into vinyl engine and what would be the point in that?
My spiritual home, I guess.
But chopping up the sections so much will turn AoS into vinyl engine and what would be the point in that?
Indeed...
Guys, creating The Techiepedia was necessary, to allow Analogue Art to 'breathe' properly and not be totally inundated with Techie-related threads, and crucially, to allow those with no interest in those topics, the ability to 'escape' from it.
The recent idler sub-forum was created in response to a specific request by Andre, and one that seemed popular after further scrutiny, although it remains to be seen if that will be the case in the long term. I'm hopeful, however, it will be. If not, all sub-forum idler-related discussions will simply be amalgamated with the rest of the threads in Analogue Art.
The fact is too, in terms of T/T discussions on AoS, the bias is towards that relating to D/D and idler (vintage T/Ts in general), said bias being dictated by the types of turntables owned by the majority of our members. Should that situation change, then we will look into creating a sub-forum for belt-drive T/Ts.
In the meantime, however, creating further T/T-related sub-forums would be counter-productive to what we want to achieve, and so it is totally off the current agenda, and therefore not up for debate. Thanks in advance for your understanding and co-operation :)

I think Dd and idler owners just ask for more help as a proportion of owners because they know less about their decks. There's nowt to a belt drive deck so little to ask about.

Sure, and hence why a dedicated sub-forum isn't warranted :)
Marco.
Sure, and hence why a dedicated sub-forum isn't warranted :)
Marco.
And all decks share SO many components and technologies that really no sub-forums are warranted.
The Techie one is slightly different if it were to only be about Techie modifications.
What you end up seeing with sub-fora are generic turntable topics and issues being aired and shared with smaller and smaller audiences within a forum.
If someone has a problem or questions regarding a 301 bearing then is that an idler issue or one that effects alll decks with similar bearings?
All threads drift and many mis-titled too. Start a thread called 'best cart for my Techie" and that person uses a Rega 300 arm and it goes in the Techie forum. Call it "best cart for my Rega 300" and it goes on the general forum yet they are both the same thread.. Many threads start with a hint of say idler deck but quickly turn generic, talking about platter mats that benefit everyone.
Basically, it only serves to reduce the conversation and involvement on a forum IMO, which can only be bad for the long term health of AoS.
I think Dd and idler owners just ask for more help as a proportion of owners because they know less about their decks. There's nowt to a belt drive deck so little to ask about.
There's nowt much to decks in general really!
The complicated bits are normally about how to control parts that are common to all decks - like motors. Doesn't matter how they then are connected to the platter, it's all similar.
Nothing in life is perfect, Nat, and your points are valid. Discussions, though, can only be controlled in content to an extent and so there will always be overlaps. It's the nature of the beast.
On the whole, however, we feel that the Techiepedia has been a success, and are confident that the idler sub-forum in time will also become likewise. We have also not noted any downturn in activity since the sub-forums were created.
On the contrary, activity has increased, and so overall, in the long term, we think that the sub-forums will be more of an asset to AoS than a liability. If not, the situation can be reviewed later. Nothing is ever written in stone.
Therefore, we'd appreciate your support (as we would of all members) of the use of the sub-forums, when there are subjects discussed there of specific interest to others and you :)

I won't know if they are of interest because they'll be out of sight without clicking on each subforum "just in case".
Is there a way to display the threads of all sub fora on the one page?

Hardly a Herculean effort, one wouldn't have thought! ;)
Anyway, as soon as you click on 'Analogue Art', the two sub-forums are at the top of the page, so not exactly hard to find; indeed their current regular use suggests that people are not struggling to find them, nor are they unwilling to make the extra effort to do so, simply popping in for a look when the urge takes them.
Let's leave it at that now, and embrace the new changes positively :)

I wouldn't mind betting there is a silent majority of belters here.:spank:
Certainly quite a few Mitchell and Notts Analogue devotees. Of course Belt drives are less problamatic so no 'help I burnt my techie main board' or 'bent my idller' threads. ;)
There certainly is a need to encourage more discussion on the alternative belting good options out there. Perhaps might draw in a few new members as well. Marco once you opened the can of worms by having a seperate Idler section I think you have to accomodate the rest of the non-techie community.

Of course they can be found - I just mean that in order to see what threads are there is hidden from the main forum page. Another click ...
Yeah, it's hardly a herculean effort to click that link but it needs a definate purposeful decision to go to look at it. After time, those who simply browse with general audio interest will eventually forget about it.
For me it matters little which forum/sub-forum a post is made to as I always click on "New Posts" when reading AoS via a browser or "Latest/Unread" view in Tapatalk via my tablet or phone.
I just choose to read or skip a thread based on its title alone.

Yup, which has been done. Techie and idler owners use the dedicated sub-forums and everyone else, for the time being, uses the main area of Analogue Art - simples! :)
There will be no more sub-forums created now or at any time in the near future.
Marco.

You look at the new posts, as Keith has said, and filter your interest in discussions accordingly, regardless of what is where. Not exactly too difficult!
Now is that it with the continual negativity, or is it maybe time to wind yer neck in and zip it, and find something else to occupy your time? ;)

I should try that - mostly just go through to each forum and scan the active topics on the front page.
My experience of doing that on other forums is that the list gets dominated by off-topic rants about politics etc so doesn't always work.
Think AoS is small enough and different enough to approach it that way.

Marco, when I first pitched the idea of separate, drive related sub-forums to you over the phone all those months ago you told me that you wanted to avoid AoS becoming another Vinyl Engine, but said you would speak to the 'chaps' about the idea. The upshot of this was that it was decided to create a Technics specific sub-forum to remove the dearth of Techie related posts from Analogue Art so that AA could 'breath'. At the time you were dead against extending the idea to accommodate other drive systems, what changed your mind, and what's the point of going halfway? As I mentioned in an earlier post, a precedent has now been set so it would seem logical to extend the idea to incorporate a BD forum seeing as they are so popular. It's not as if AA will become a wasteland, there's far more to analogue than just TT's
I've explained it all already, Dave. The idler sub-forum was created after Andre requested it recently (it wasn't on our minds up until that point to do anything - please let that bit sink in), and also after noticing on the thread Andre started afterwards, to canvas opinion on the matter amongst the membership, that the idea was a popular one.
None of this has stemmed from the conversation we had on the phone before, but rather was stimulated by recent requests from others. Again, I'm stressing this point. If Andre hadn't PM'd me on the matter recently, and asked for an idler sub-forum, none would've existed on the forum!
However, having granted his wish, we're unwilling at the moment to create any further sub-forums, although that may change in future. Therefore in the meantime, discussion of EVERYTHING to do with analogue source equipment, out with of Techy and idler turntable chat, should be posted in the main Analogue Art section. If you want to chat about belt-drive T/Ts, it goes in there.
I don't see what's difficult or awkward to understand about that, matey, so would rather that people just accepted this now and got on with it, without the need for any further explanation or justification for our actions. Cheers!
Marco.
It's your forum matey and ultimately you have the final say, but if there is a mouth to feed...
Maybe it is worth starting a thread to gauge interest ;)

Just as a point.....As a purely analogue user and so aiming mainly for the analogue section...
When I initially started looking at this forum I got the impression that it was for technics users .It took a good few lurks before I decided to join.
Mayhap others get the same ??
When I initially started looking at this forum I got the impression that it was for technics users.
...which was part of the reason for creating a dedicated sub-forum: to dilute that impression. Now, when you look at the main body of Analogue Art, it's Techy-free! :)

Doesn't everyone do this? It seems the most logical to me.
I'm not one for confrontation or trying to press home a point, tending to accept the inevitable. I can fully understand Marco's reasoning and Andre putting forward his idea, and accept them. What I am asking myself though is what would be the harm in having a B.D. sub? You would have equality.
Still not sure why some are getting so animated. But that's life.
Fora tend to follow the lead of their owners, or senior admin team, and at this time, Marco is steeped in tweaked-out Techiness :) so of course, this is going to be the main focus of interest here.
I have all three types and obviously spent most of my career time fondling rubber-band driven decks (I'm rubbered out these days ) and currently regularly use direct and idler driven devices. I appreciate not wanting this site to become like VE, which I very much enjoy visiting and occasionally posting on in the Dual and Garrard sections there, but a generic belt-cord drive sub-section here may be worth another look at some point :)
Doesn't everyone do this? It seems the most logical to me.
Different strokes for different folks.
The new post thing takes threads from all over the forum and mixes them up. If one area like the classifieds become particularly active or the other sections you're not necessarily interested in become active then those that are of interest are pushed down and perhaps won't appear on the first few pages - perhaps an interesting thread has been contributed to since you were last on but still not for a little while, it won't appear on the new posts list without wading through many pages.
Then visually, for me, the new post list is full of posts without obvious context without a lot of eye movement to check which forum it's from, all jumbled up.. Not a very relaxing way to do things IME.
Better then to check out the areas that do interest you by travelling to each forum seperately. On the first page of each, threads that are a few days old are still there to catch up with.

I thoroughly agree. There seems to be a shift towards old idler wheel and DDT's which detract from the fact that there are many fantastic belt drive TT's out there in Hi-Fi land. I think below the belt is a splendid idea.
Great name. If we ever have a separate area for belt-drive T/T discussions, that's what it will be called! ;)
Marco.
Well I for one would like a separate sub-forum for belt drives...but I'd rather call it - "belt one home".
But I'd also like a sub-forum for Canadians, a place where we Canucks can speak "English".
And finally a sub-forum for we gents with big.....errr....ego's!!!!
Ya, I think I'll belt another one back!

I'm a bit late arriving on this thread.
Anyway, I own four TTs, two direct drive, two belt drive, one actually usable, the rest basically OK but need fettling.
I've done the idler thing and I'm unlikely to go there again (unless I spot a nice Dual). Also been the Techie route and probably won't give it another try. Same applies to Regas.
What other drive configurations can there be? I remember seeing wind-up gramophones with bevel gear drive, but I think that's unlikely to feature in Hi-Fi. Can you imagine the cogging effects you'd get (literally)?
I don't have a real preference of drive type, as each can deliver the goods when implemented well, but I see no problem with a dedicated sub-section/forum/area for belt drives. who knows? many may wish to contribute to 'The belt band'!
Indeed, and they can do, in the main body of 'Analogue Art'. At the moment, and for the foreseeable future, *that* is the belt-drive T/T aficionado's place to live! ;)
Marco.

I joined a bit ago and posted about my Thoren's experience and it fell on deaf ears. I figured this was for the most part a Technics site so I left to pursue more open minded sites. I have owned Technics tables in the past and felt they were very cold sounding. I see all these tweaks to bring them to performance levels that I have attained with my modified Thorens tables, and I really don't get the disdain of a format here.
I have heard wonderful tables using every conceivable drive system, so it comes down to execution not drive system to me, but what do I know, I just a belt drive owning Yank. :^)
