View Full Version : Mikey's DP-3000 Adventure.
After my recent fun and games with a failed attempt at buying a Teccy 1210 and a sale of the Denon that also fell through, I've decided to keep it.
So let's see what can be done! :)
Here's where it all started...

First step, the Hadcock tonearm is not a good match to the deck or cartridge, so it's gone!
Second step, replace it, any decent TT will need an arm of some sort obviously!
I should be back in a couple of hours with the next update. ;)

I always thought it looked like another one of my favourite toys

Mike, you can moderate this as you see fit!

For those that don't know, the new arm is a unipivot.
Only thing is... 'pivot' is something of a misnomer.
It's actually a wickedly sharp evil bastard spike thing!!! :steam:

I'm liking it, Mikey! I bet the AT sings like a canary when you get her fired up :)

Hope so!
I got called out again after the last piccy so I've got no further yet. :(

gotta give it abt 30-40 hrs run in for it to sound its best tho ...
How much is the arm please?
I liked those old Denon motor units. The arms that went with them weren't so hot though IIRC.
How's the plinth on yours? Some were quite solid as I remember.
Hi Dave,
I bought the arm used (it doesn't look it though - 20hrs use) for £495.
The plinth is a fairly substantial chunk of veneered ply, but I'm not too keen on it. Can't say too much more ATM, thats for another chapter of the adventure. ;)
Cheers...

Solid silver in Teflon with a copper braid screen and an outer nylon braid. And fancy plugs. I'd like to say it's a pleasure, but it's not! I'm getting sick of 'threading things'!!! :(

Looks great Mike. Mr Liang looks positively sparkling too. I do hope you haven't been listening to The Final Cut too much. You've already shed enough tears over that TT. Two Suns In The Sunset' is likely to finish you off ;)
Here's hoping it sounds better with the VPI instead of the Hadcock...
It sounds so much better it's not funny! :)
Everything about this arm is an improvement over the old Haddock. And it doesn't feel like it's been cobbled together out of bits of old Biro and sticky backed plastic!
I'm soooo glad I didn't get rid of the Denon, and this is just the beginning!

Hi Mike
I have a similar ufo TT from denon and am looking to construct a plinth - just wondering what your plans were - slate seems dear but looks nice and comes recommended from the SP10 boys - looking at ply myself with a bit of roofing lead thrown in for weight
If you are going quicker than me I would be interested in your plinth as currently without working TT until I get something built

I am currently waiting for a slate company to get back to me with a price for my commissioned plinth, I was originally going to do a double layer plinth, but have since decided to get a single, monster 100mm deep slab (tombstone stylee), it looks like it will have to be cut with a water jet, so this will bump the price up a bit, but fingers crossed.
That is going to be one heavy monster of a plinth but should sound great

It would be amazing for 10 times that Will..
I've fancied one of those DIY Schroeder jobbies for ages, seen some really nice ones. Maybe one for later on. :)
I was having a look around for some bits and came across this:
http://www.hifido.co.jp/KWdenon/G0601/E/30-10/C07-29773-88592-00/
Is it any different to what you've got? It looks rather nice though, will be a drop-in fit for your DP-3000, and it's only (approx) £91! Of course you'll need to import it, but even allowing for those costs it should still work out quite reasonable :)
Here are some others, but I'm not sure if they'll all fit:

Hi Marco,
That first one is EXACTLY what it's mounted in right now. :)
It's one of the better Denon plinths apparently but there are 'things that can be done' to improve it further, this will be 'Stage 2.5' which I'll be doing while the motor unit is away for 'Stage 2'. ;)
I've literally just got off the phone arranging stage 2, and this weekend I'll be pulling the deck apart and boxing up the motor unit ready for it's little trip to cider country.
Chez-Mr Cawley, per chance? ;)
No worries - it was just on the off chance that any of the plinths there were desirable. It also looks like the plinth you've got perhaps isn't as bad as you first thought :)
Marco.
