Simon, (or anyone else),
I've heard that they are a bit OTT at the top end - have you found that as I'm hovering over the 'Buy' button. :)
Dave.
I did not find them to hot but I was using a Lehmann headphone amp at the time

John,
Just in case of any confusion, by 'OTT' I meant 'Over The Top' (i.e. very pronounced and loud?) rather than 'hot'.
Sorry if I'm the only one that's confused  .
Dave.
I love 'em but then again I have nothing to compare them to. I really only use them when we have people staying over and I want a late session.
I have them straight out of my Myryad pre and they sound open and not overly bright at all. ;)
They sounded quite balanced I think talk to Stan as I know he has a pair It was a good few years ago I think for me I hardly used mine so did not see the point in keeping them
wee tee cee

Dave.Dave ,
What cans are you using just now? The Superlux range that THOMANN does are great bang for your buck.....have a wee search for reviews on the 668b. In conjunction with velvet akg 240 replacement pads they are very good...
I bought the AKG K-550's from them a little earlier in the year at around the same price - but they are closed back so no annoying the missus...
They are well put together and sound fantastic - bags of detail and bass.
Used them with various portable head amps (fiio and c-moy types) and Rega Ear - sound good with everything I've tried them with.

Tony,
I started off serious HP listening with Superlux 661 after reading an entusiastic thread on Rock Grotto and I liked them a lot. Since then I've tried a wide variety of cans, all second hand, which offered no improvement on them. So I 'invested' in a new pair of Senn HD280 which I really took too, particularly after I had them recabled with silver wire.
Then a few days ago I got lucky on an on-line auction site and bought a job lot of ex-BBC World Service cans for not a lot which contained a pair each of Canford DMH285s and BeyerD 109s, together with 2 pairs of Senn Canford HD480s, so I'm well set up for cans ATM  .
My interest in the 701s was that I thought I'd often read that they were as good as it gets for reasonable money and at nearly half price perhaps I should invest again  . I asked for opinions before I spent and was surprised to hear that my earlier impressions were mistaken - most responses were less than totally enthusiastic, so I'll keep my money in my pocket ;) .
Cheers,
Dave.
Chris,
I've also read good things about the AKG 550, one from a professional in the music industry, and they do seem to be very well liked.
Dave.
Speak to Stan he uses them a lot and will be able to give you a good appraisal on them in your system
Cans are very personal
