View Full Version : Paging Croft specialists
I am the happy owner of a Croft combo especially when it works properly
Since this morning, the line stage of my 25R is mute. I can listen to my vinyl rig but not to my cd player.
I have changed valves without effect. I assume the line stage is on the left side.
Any suggestion ?
The phono stage is on the left, and if I'm not mistaken, the phono stage goes to the output via the line stage.
Check interconnects and possibly reverse them at the input, as well as trying a different input socket for the CD player to see if it's an internal connection or a switch issue?
Sound is back on every input but totally distorted. I'll change interconnects but I imagine that if there were something wrong with them, I'd rather have a ground loop instead.
Long shot I know but you haven't got Line and Line Out mixed up have you? I did that once and got the same problem you have.

You're not the only one. I've seen that several times and not just with Croft.
The combo has been working this way for 6 months or so and I assume that volume could not be adjusted but it can.

Have you checked the 3 slow-blow fuses on the back? I had one blow and it caused distortion.
Oops! That was my Series 7 amp. Dont know if the 25 has the same fuses.
Let's see the fuses !!
In fact, I do not understand what's is happening since yesterday either it is totally mute or with awful distortion alternatively.

Sounds very much like a fuse to me. I don't have a separate phono section, but have blown fuses on my 7 and 7R by switching on the pre amp after switching on the power amp and the power surge blowing the power amp fuse. Check all the little black fuse holders in each of your units. Checked with the man himself and he immediately diagnosed the problem as blown fuse. Keep spare fuses as a result.

Fuses are definitively guilty !!!
I only unscrewed and screwed them back and now it is perfect.
Thanks to you all !!!!
I had this happen with regularity on my first croft 25R until Glen replaced it. Fused circuit in the input side of the power amp seemed very susceptible to overload if the input selector was switched with the volume turned up or without flicking the mute switch. I learned to mute the output from the pre before switching inputs via the selector and didn't have a problem with blowing fuses after this.
No sound again this morning :steam:
No time for surgery, but I'm not far from being fed up.

Where about in France are you Didier?
I'll give it a look over for you if you're not too far away.
 Alan
Thanks for your help Alan. unfortunately, I'm in le Havre, a long drive from l'Indre but once it is fixed, I'll be pleased to welcome you.
I'll try to poke the fuses once again when I'm back home because yesterday afternoon, the fuses were ok (none was blown) and I only moved them. Everything was ok yesterday (late) evening when I switched off but no sound again this morning.
Does sound like fuses. Have you removed them to check them?

OK Didier, thanks for the invitation.
I was just thinking maybe there is a dry joint on the back of the fuseholder, the fuses inside are held under spring tension.
If you are confident to take the cover off you could see if the wires on the fuseholders are a little loose, if so re-solder if necessary.
Cheers, Alan
The fun is still going on : it is now working even if I haven't done anything. This is the kind of things I don't like at all.
I'll try to change fuses (as far as I can find the appropriate ones in Le Havre) to get rid of this problem.

Occasionally, a fuse can blow or break and make intermittent contact.
Isn't there a relay on the output? maybe this is sticky or intermittent in some way?
