Cleaning veneers ?
I need a very good deep clean of my speaker cases
I have read Barry's entry in the knowledge cafe and he recommends a wipe with white spirit
I want to avoid leaving any residue / oil film on the veneer as I am going to paint the cases ( wood finish does not fit in with my decor )
Also I do not want to sand the cases as I will sand off the wood grain
Any suggestions ?
:)

If they have been treated with wax or furniture polish and you don't get this off, you'll get fish-eyes in the paint finish. If they are old cases they could have years of polish built-up on them. Best to clean with white spirit and fine steel wool to get into the grain.

I was going to try sugar soap , the product you use to wash down paintwork before painting , Suppose I could try one panel first and see how it goes :)

You need to cut back whatever finish is already on the wood and then key the surface so that it will allow the paint you are using to adhere to it properly.
White spirit and very fine wire wool. Rub only along the grain direction.
Try it on the bottom first.

Finish off with methylated spirit on a pad, this will remove any greasy residue.

Get a veneer scraper and drag it along the finish with the grain, paying attention to the overlaps at the edges so as not to lift opposing veneer ends. It will lift any wax and pretty much any oil that wasn't diluted with spirit. It'll shift Colron or Liberon oils.
I stripped the Liberon oil finish from my Yammies before waxing them.

OP states he wants to paint finish so i recon a proper remover is in order.
ps: i hate wax & oiling wood, it looks dull, void of any freshness imho.
Just wipe your nose on the back of your sleeve, and rub the accumulated nasal slather into the grain - you'll find the cabinets come up a treat!

Tip!
Never use Teak oil or any other oil based wood finishing teatment on veneers, as some veneer adhesives are soluble in oil and your veneer may start lifting off.

I Danish oiled mine 12 years ago and they're still fine. :)

Depends on the veneer adhesive!

Depends what kind of paint you are going to use...oil,water,or acrylic based?
How are you going to apply it? Brush, roller, or spray?
OR....depending on your budget, and if you have the drivers out,you could just bring them to a friendly car sprayer, who will prepare them and give them a coat of primer to seal them, and then what ever colour you want....
Friend of mine got his teak speakers sprayed black by the local sprayer and they came up a treat, very professional looking...but with a bit of work, you could do a good job yourself with the proper roller/paint combo
