Well, we have the Album of 2012 thread (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22263) - but what about new discoveries you've made during the year - old albums that have only just appeared on your musical radar?

For me, I've been totally blown away by this album:

Marillion - Afraid of Sunlight (1995)

I was vaguely aware of post-Fish marillion, knew that Tim here and Sparrow are big fans, but I found Afraid of Sunlight because the track Out of this World is about Donald Campbell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Campbell), and I was reading about the recovery of Bluebird after hearing Donald's daughter Gina on Radio 4 a few weeks ago.

Apparently, this song inspired the recovery of the boat (and Donald's body) in 2001 - Both Steve Hogarth and Steve Rothery from the band were present at the raising, and the boat is undergoing a painstaking restoration (http://www.bluebirdproject.com/bbp/). Donald's body was laid to rest on 12th September 2001 - a moment which was rather overshadowed by World events the day before...

"While not a concept album as such, Afraid of Sunlight repeatedly examines the destructive side of celebrity" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afraid_of_Sunlight_(album)

I love discovering the stories behind music. Bazil's recent Album Club selection of Roger Waters' Amused to Death has all the hallmarks of being another great 2012 discovery - another superb piece of work and a moving real-life story behind the music.

So - what have been your 2012 discoveries?

For me, I discovered a new band called "missing. Andy"

Lots of influences.....great lyrics....a bit like a modern day Jam

I have posted about this in Spinning Today, but thought it deserved another mention as I truly love this album and folk may have missed it.

Adam Cohen - Like a Man
2011 - Cooking Vinyl Records

This is one of my finds of the year, as firstly I had no idea that Leonard's son was a performing musician and also that he is hugely talented. I saw him recently as support for Rufus Wainwright in Bristol and he quite honestly blew the roof off. Despite clearly being unknown to the majority of the audience, he had us eating out of his hands after just 2 songs. The best support act I have personally ever seen and I have never witnessed an audience react so rapturously for a support act. His slot was only 30 or so minutes long, but he completely won everyone over with his music and personable banter between songs - I think everyone truly wanted a lot more. He had the whole house singing 'So Long, Marianne' which I have to say was rather moving - the applause after that was deafening, with most people in the audience (including me) standing. He seemed totally at home and at ease with his performance as did the audience with him. All in all, the entire night was my best gig of the year.

Funnily enough I was at a Martha Wainwright gig a few days ago and overheard a woman talking behind me about a Rufus Wainwright gig she had recently been to in London, but kept talking about Adam Cohen. She described the atmosphere he created as 'electric' and also said it was an astonishingly good performance - so the Bristol show wasn't a fluke!

Anyway, this is his third solo album and a bit of a departure from his earlier music (which I think is poor) and I think he's finally made the right choice. Its more of a homage to his father's style, which he has previously shunned, but this latest album embraces it - which really works IMO. I have played this countless times since buying it and if it had been released this year, it would have been a clear winner for my album of the year. If you like LC you really should check this out - I won't appeal to everyone, but should please fans of his father.
