Yes i heard some of it being played at HiFisounds in Stockton on Tees last Thursday. very polished. It made be realize just how bloody good the original one was. By far my prefered personal preferance.

Just purchased it and completely disappointed. I was expecting good things as the original is very good on vinyl, but this version on vinyl is complete pants I'm afraid.

the original is a classic and a childhood favourite. I managed to pick up a mint copy for .99p with intact artwork etc. Why mess around with something that's a classic :scratch:

It's got that Barlow in it... enough for me to not buy it. I really don't like that bloke...

Thing is, it's almost identical to the original.. so why re-make it? -:scratch: Just get the original.. it sounds superb.

Jeff Wayne has done little else as far as I can remember so he has to keep redoing it to keep the piggy bank topped up I imagine. Saw him interviewed and claims he's added bits that couldn't be fitted on the length of the 2 original LPs. Trouble is take away the original all analogue sound plus the late Richard Burton and you aren't going to reproduce the magic. Frankly the original was pretty 'modern' sounding anyway.

picked it up from the supermarket on CD shortly after posting and I quite like it.

I can remember the original. Listening to it on vinyl on my parent National Panasonic music centre in the late 70's. it was awesome then and its still awesome now.

I can see why there is mixed feeling but I would say it sounds pretty good if you can accept it for what it is. I'm going to get it on vinyl too anyway just because....

But I doubt it would make any in-roads with a 'younger' audience, as so many of these kind of remakes are supposed to do.

A friend mentioned this had be re-hashed, he mentioned that Barlow creature was in it & I probably had the same reaction as you Joe ;)

I must admit I was skeptical but Neeson is very good and overall I think it has retained allegiance to the original. For me, its another good album in the collection. :D

After reading this I had a wee rummage and found that I still had a copy of the original on vinyl, all I need now is a turntable to play it on.:scratch:

Well I would ;) I also have sound (pardon) reasons to.

Frankly I don't think that anyone is going to beat the combination of Burton, Lynott, Covington & believe it or not Essex :D

I have enough music, downloaded another 20 or so GB today. In all honesty I'd rather have something new & different than buy something I already have that I somehow don't think will be equalled (let alone bettered) :cool:

Besides which I doubt it's available on SACD, another negative for it.

Now I must say I do prefer the original, but Liam Neeson is excellent, really conveys the horror and dread, and if anything makes this scarier than the original.

Gary Barlow didn't irritate me like I thought he would, plays it straight, respectful of the material. The bloke from the Kaiser Chiefs was if anything better than David Essex.

I take issue with the guy who played the parson. He was a bit annoying and made me long for Phil Lynott's version.

On the whole the production and music were very similar, an extra synth here, a bit of dubstep 'wob wob wob' there, a few extra beats etc.

At the end of the day, I played it, I enjoyed it. Not sure if I'd buy it, but if I did it would be for Liam Neeson's narration.

That just about sums it up for me except I already bought it!!! Will probably stick the vinyl on the xmas list.

Disc 1 is a better listen than disc 2 The whole bit with the parson and his wife (I assume that was Joss Stone) was a bit wonky and yes I was quite glad when the parson was no more!!!:doh:

It was the same with the original version..disc two was far more enjoyable ..but this new version for me beats the original.

Based on what ? What source equipment used and whether you are comparing both versions on vinyl or CD makes a big difference. I can't remember when a modern digital redo beat the original all analogue. Exception may be some of Steve Hacket's latest Genesis material. Whatever the musicianship and recording, I can't see any of the 'new' artists used here surpasing the original vocal interpretations.

Listening to a few parts v spotify - too clean and artificial -real instruments / analogue synth replaced by digital keys/synth. Neeson does good but not a patch on Burton. Barlow v Anderson your joking. Ricky Wilson is totaly miscast. Yet to listen to the other contributions. Sounds good if you haven't heard the original on double vinyl I suppose.

I can't comment on this musically as I haven't heard it but I can't imagine there being a good reason bar greed and keeping the greasy wheels rolling to have done this.

The original album in my view is a classic (first proper rock album I ever owned, a Christmas present from my Mum and Dad), its perfection so why try to remake it. I was really disappointed when I found out this was a rehash rather than a continuation of the original - there is after all an open ending which would allow for this.

Jeff is a one hit wonder as he has produced nothing good since War of the Worlds and I have heard Spartacus (puts head in hands and slowly shakes head).

I will wait till this is available cheap and I will have a listen then but being honest I have a closed mind re this rehash and it will take a lot to open it.
