View Full Version : Buy cheap, get a headache FREE!
Last xmas I bought the missus an ipad thingy off ebay because having mine and her desktop PCs working together were not a sensible option after we moved house due to space limitations.
It worked fine for a couple of months until she did the usual trick of downloading some crap screensaver and soon after there were warning messages appearing at every moment saying some software was 'missing'. Her nephew did a clean out and reset which cleared the warning message but now the damn thing MAY boot on the 10th attempt and the best I have managed is to arrive at the home screen and a total freeze up, so back to multiple boot attempts all over again . . . . . .
I suspect the generic chinese Android OS is well and truly rogered, so how can I restore or install another version, given that I can't even access t'internet?

Seriously, contact 'MartinT', he may be able to point you in the right direction. He amongst others seems to be knowledgeable about computery stuff.

A little more info would help. You say it's an iPad thingy, but you then say its android, so by iPad thingy, I presume you mean a tablet of some sort.
So, what is it? Make and model?
It has a label stuck on the back which reads thus:

I held down the HOME button while pressing the POWER button, it booted up without a hitch and touch wood it seems to be working OK at the moment whereas last week it would not boot up at all :eyebrows:
The missus is having a play with it now :yay:

Fingers crossed it stays that way.
She used it for about 15 minutes and it then froze. Restarted it and it has hung again on the desktop and wouldn't unlock. With each reset/power up the boot sequence gets shorter and shorter until it won't get beyond the penguin icon now :(
Chuck it in the bin, mate, and go back to using more reliable (better sounding) traditional technology! ;)

You may be able to save it if you can find a tech bod to root the device and install a more up to date and reliable version of Android on it Frank. If that doesn't work then I would suggest that it is a hardware fault...
If you find the unit is defunct I can heartily recommend the Nexus 7 or Kindle FireHD 7" tabs if you are considering replacing the unit. Both devices have their strong points and both retail for under two hundred quid.
The Nexus 7 is speedy, has a quad core CPU, a decent screen and the standard Android OS install will be familiar to anyone who is proficient at operating an Android phone.
The Kindle FireHD also employs a version of Android OS but it has been re-skinned by Amazon to make it more ergonomic. This device has a fabulous screen and is particularly useful for those who already have a Kindle account. All previously purchased ebooks from your Kindle library will also be transferred. This device can also display 1080p video via a its built in mini-HDMI port.
Neither device has a facility to expand the memory so it is best to buy the model with the largest memory capacity, which is 32gb for both units IIRC.

She has a Samsung mobile with Android on it and the tablet is a bigger version of it that she keeps by the bedside for when she can't sleep during the night. Has been using the mobile but much prefers the tablet because of the larger screen.
I think I might just stash it away in a cupboard until the time comes when someone works out a simple cure you simply shove in on an SD card. Aside from the fragile and wobbly OS it is a neat little device and I hate chucking in the bin what has the inate potential to do better
