Yes, great speakers, I had 5 pairs at one point, Mark (dingdong) took them off my hands, would have kept them all but the wife hated the retro look, very good sound with valves.

Unfortunately, the surrounds of the EMI bass units in most DM3's have shrunk and hardened by now. Must check my pair of DM3's.

lol, I can almost beat that, just before the DM3 came out, Jim Rogers sold me two of the special EMI 13x8 inch units, two Celestion HF1300's and two STC 4001G's. I built the crossover and cabinets, still have them, and only about 10 years ago got a pair of real DM3's

Several years ago i heard a high end system with big PMC speakers, was good. The owner then switched over to a pair of DM2a's. Not a massive difference and I was not quite sure which I preferred.

We traded in a pair of DM3's just before I had to pack it all in and move here. They sounded horrible - no treble even though the tweeters seemed to be working. The responses showed the tweeter level a bit down on the bass-mid, but nowt like this pair. I was gone before these could be taken apart for examination..

Alex's pair of DM1's show great promise, but the rubber compound corrugated surrounds of the 10 x 6 main drivers has hardened and the cone barely moves. fantastic midband though..

Applying brake fluid (dot 3 or 4) to later Spendor SP1/2 and all SP2 series cone surrounds is mandatory, as these harden after just a few years (initial research done by the designer Derek Hughes who wasn't aware of the problem when these things were designed). I wonder if other rubber compound surrounds that have gone off could be restored this way?

Something definitely wrong with those DM3's. I have owned two pairs (plus my home built clones if one can call them that as there were built before the release of the DM3), none of them sounded as you describe.

I believe that the surrounds on the units in the DM3 and DM1 are PVC. I wonder if the brake fluid works non this. I may have a go on a spare EMI unit.

Does brake fluid soften some rubber/plastic type materials? Like feeding leather?
