Got a couple of items on ebay at the moment which I specified as collection only because I don't have any suitable packaging for safe shipment.

Had a plethora of messages from eastern europeans who have their own courier and packing arrangements and get quite shirty when I am not all that keen to entertain this. Already sold one item that I have the packaging for and it's going to an account number at a warehouse in London at the behest of a Russian buyer who is "UK registered" according to ebay.

Must be some money to be made over on the continent from this gear

My original set of quadII's went on eBay to a guy in Holland. I was very dubious but he drove over one Saturday and collected them!!!!

I was very surprised when he showed up. That was about 9 years ago.

We're a very poor country these days I believe and the far east seems to be full of gear enthusiasts with loads of money to burn right now. Sad but true I think and it's this that's pushing the prices up on stuff that was being chucked out ten years ago...

We're a very poor country these days.....

With the greatest of respect, that is a complete and utter load of loblocks.
Have you experienced what life is like in a 'very poor country'? OK, as a nation we currently have a lower proportion of our income to spend on luxuries. And, yes we're having to tighten things up a bit at the moment. And there are more affluent countries. However, we live incredibly extravagant and almost criminally profligate lifestyles.

To describe the UK as very poor is a bit of a kick in the teeth to those people who live in countries where the average annual income is measured in hundreds of dollars and the average life expectancy is in the 40's.

I'd suggest a little perspective is required.

There are different kinds of poor, some country's are not buried in debt for 10 generations to come. but have little money for even food.

If you compare apples to oranges YES, the UK and U.S. is doing well but comparing apples to apples we are not.
You can not compare the U.K. to Pakistan or France God willing at least not for now!

Hmm. All to do with politics and nothing to do with the global finiancial crisis and internet revolution and the growing affluence of developing nations??

We've had the same thing like Cadburys being sold to some foreign company, a British icon with so much history being taken overseas, people sacked, downsizing etc etc. These foreign companies coming here and taking our jobs! Who was it again? Oh, yeah that US food giant Kraft Foods.

So, nothing to do with politics, just that the massive companies have all the leverage to take over smaller ones whilst making a bit of profit from a little of asset stripping, the kind of thing Mit Romney loves to do with Bain Capital, destroying US jobs..

It's about class, money and power, nothing to do with political leanings.

You can be poor in the mind whilst still having lots of money.

People aren't poor in this country but they are debt laden and the political and social climate instils the idea that they must now hunker down and re-pay this unpayable debt and cut off extravigent spending.

Basically, with all the private debt the public have taken on they spent today's money yesterday and now are also having to forgo tomorrow's money to pay off the interest too.

People should just default and only harm the creditors instead of dragging the whole economy down in order to make sure the creditors are paid ok.. They took the risk in lending and so should accept the consequences of that risk that were reflected in the interest payments. Lenders have over-stretched themselves for a supposed quicker buck, so tough!

Remember also that the pound lost 30% of its value in 2008/9 and people overseas still are seeing UK paid prices as a lot cheaper than in their own as a consquence. It all comes around but we have the disadvantage of not talking all the languages of the other countries so find it hard to buy back into this country.

I disagree, Bain Cap saved nearly 90% of all the failed company's it took over,In most cases bain used there capital to bail out poorly managed companys and saved a Hell of a lot of U.S. jobs, often the problem was bad management and high interest business loans. Look passed the media and read the numbers from the Wall St. Journal.
Politics affect business,if you don't think thats true look at the U.S. stock market directly after the election.
As for Cadbury's it was my favorite for life and the stuff underthat name sucks now made by Hershey's, the chocolate is not nearly as creamy smooth now, it's Americanized.
I'm not happy with Henz making HP sauce now ether, but what I'm talking about is company's being forced to close there doors by high taxes and regulations that come as a result of an anti business administration.

I find it obscene to bring politics into this, the whole world is suffering and THAT isn't Obama's fault. Frankly the US has been living beyond its means for years, going back way before Obama came to power. The medicine may taste sour but it is necessary. Welcome to the real world America...

The US is one of the lowest tax countries on the planet! The problem is more a low income issue than a high tax one.

Well if we are talking corporation tax that is not the case. It is actually one of the highest according to this:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/feb/21/corporation-tax-rates-world#data

High taxes destroy the competitveness of companies and, as a consequence, destroy jobs.

Being 'poor' and being 'in debt' is not even in the same ball park guys.

As Andrew says, take a trip around a 'poor' country if you want to realise how lucky you are. Most of the world thinks of nothing but where is the next meal coming from. Travel certainly focuses your attention to what's important and what isn't.

Big US companies don't pay tax because all their profit is made by a filing cabinet in Liechenstein. :)

That depends.

Try being in debt to a mafia, gangster loan shark and I'm sure you'd rather find yourself just simply poor and on the streets than have the lives of your family threatened, perhaps one of them maimed in the process.

On a more realistic level, even facing having your house repossessed and your world around you destroyed can be much harder to cope with than simply being steadily poor. Some simly don't cope with it and commit suicide.

Still, as you say, you meant being in debt in the UK versus being so poor as to being on deaths door and your family too elsewhere.

10s of years really. Just not as visibly perhaps.
