New Phono Stage or SUT for DL-103R

Hi.

I'm looking for some advice for my new Technics + Jelco SA-750D setup. I am looking at getting a DL-103R for the arm and either a SUT or a new phono stage, like the P75 (2nd hand).

At the moment I am using a DL-110 with my Rega Brio-R internal MM phono stage. I'm thinking the better phono stage may be the way to go. Can anyone offer any advice? I'd like to save as much money as possible.

I can get a Denon AU-300LC + DL-103R for roughly the same price as a P75 MkII (used). The only thing I don't like about the 300LC is the cheap output RCA cables.

OR (cheapest option yet), get a Goldring 2500 and forget about MC carts. I've heard the 2500 works well with the Jelco.

it may be worth getting a SUT. I've got a SUT in my system and the changes are night and day, I hate using that analogy as its over used but in my case i think its justified. Just make sure that you get a SUT that perfectly matches your cart what ever you plump for.

As above. It's a good phono stage in the Brio-R, so you might like to consider a good x'mer or step-up like the Albarry MCA-11. That would give superior results to many MC phono stages on the market.

I've got an expert stylus co rebuilt 103 which currently runs very happily into a meridian 200 series phono stage which I've modified as a stand alone stage with a very big psu and decent linear regs.

I've just got an ANT Kora board from Alex which I'm building up with premium components. I hope it's a good match for the modded Techie with the diamond and sapphire clad 103 ;-)

Worth remembering (sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs here) that the 103R has a 14 Ohm internal impedence which is quite different to the standard 103's 40 Ohms.

I've had some really good results with a 103R into a P75 set to PE mode. Cracking little phonostage IME and it worked seriously well with my old SPU aswell. :)

I'd get a SUT. The Rothwells look good or pick up an interesting one second hand. There's not much to go wrong and they sound excellent.

If you're bored with an MC (doubtful) you can just take it out and go back to your MM.

I've used mine with a Croft Epoch ( excellent) and now the VTL (excellent++).

I know people go on about matching them to cartridges but I've used it with a Denon DL304, Goldring Eroica L, Ortofon Rondo Bronze and now Benz Wood SL; it's worked with all of them.

I forgot to add make sure the earthing is right or you'll wonder what the fuss is about.

Earth the tonearm lead and the ground on the SUT to the earth on the back of the amp. I've then taken an earth lead from there to the earth on my Russ Andrews Purifier plug block.:stalks:
