ESLs nice, but won't suit headbangers.

Quad II, pleasant mid & top, slack/soft bottom end. Not as good as the Leak Stereo 20 I had.

Hmm. I think that sells the Quad II a bit short - they have superbly rich midrange tonality, imo - they make pretty much anything else sound a bit thin and anaemic. But dynamically, they are for the relaxed, chilled-out pipe&slippers brigade and they are not exactly detail-meisters either.
They bored the pants off me after a very brief honeymoon period (about 5 minutes!).

Yep, a Leak Stereo 20 is much more to my taste, as well. :)

Why is that Andre ? I had concordant Quads for a few years , sweet sounding but no balls .

Paul is good to deal with , I bought one of his silver IC's and still use it .

I bought my Crofted Quad II's from Paul... Also tried some Leak TL-12's.. He put up with my messing about and went for the Quad II's.

They were no ordinary ones though. I like the sound of Quad II's, they are not chest bashing that's a given but a nice mellow sound, if you like mellow.

Erm , four years to be exact and I was pretty skint for a while , they were Concordant modified Quads and not bad really ,ask Glen Croft if he remembers them ? I'm sure he knew Doug Dunlop very well .

Bought my Lentek headamp from there - only positive vibes from me and I'd happily use him again :)

I've used QII's (my Crofty ones), TL12's (on extended loan before and after Croft rebuild) and the Stereo 20 (Croft and "a-n-other" rebuild). I like the Stereo 20 best of all these as a general purpose fun valve amp, the Quad as a charming, band limited, characterful and supremely enjoyable (with the right cable) and the TL12's absolutely wonderful but only in a narrow system context.

I had Quad II's for 4/5yrs, then sent them to Paul at Classique for a rebuild etc, enjoyed them ok, but I happened to buy an elderly Arcam Alpha and compared it against the Quad II's and the Arcam won, so I sold my Quad's.

I still use the Arcam Alpha to power either my ESL 57's or Audioplan Kontrast MkII II's, for £40 it's a bargain amp that's sounds great (for me)!

Quad 11's arn't that bad when rebuilt properly they are certainly not as shit as some make them out to be, the Stereo 20 is a lot more modern sounding if thats the right word i prefer the term "musical", they can be a bit on the bright side if you put in the wrong caps but we are talking about EL84's one of my favorite valves so i'm biased anyway
