Just trying to use this (after some years!)

It all lights up but I can't get it to play, initially I thought a bulb may have gone in one of the controls but I've managed to get the play light to flash but it won't come off pause, any ideas what might be wrong?

I think your tape isnt threaded properly on the left....not sure though,I also had a similar problem where it wouldent move on the leader tape, and I used to just fast forward a bit...hope this helps:).....oh,and switch it off and unplug before rethreading

Thanks for the reply. Managed to get it running but only via timer start/play & it's somewhat reluctant to keep running, can't get any of the controls to work otherwise. A further complication is that the on/off button has came adrift & fallen inside the casing :(. Checked the instruction manual (yes I still have it) with regard to tape threading and this appears to be ok.

I have a GX-620 which is very similar - my analogue tape counter is the only difference I can see.
Yes, you've got it threaded correctly.
Was the Pause button engaged already when you switched on?
Do you have the wired remote?

Pause wasn't engaged at first Chris, I was pressing buttons to try and make something happen and that's what did. Tried the timer start play and it started running but needed help (and kept stopping). Thought it might be a problem with belts but think this is direct drive. Fast forward and rewind don't seem to work at all.

Yes, it is direct drive.
When you power it down does it not disengage the transport - I don't know, I've never tried it on mine.
The buttons can be a little tricky if you don't use them for a while.

Thanks Chris. Not sure about the transport, it's certainly not doing what it's supposed to. I'll try an air duster on the buttons tomorrow and see if I can get things going.
